Hearing Protection?....Oops.

This morning got up early and set up some steel targets.
Checked for safety glasses---on.
Fired the first round from my Smith and Wesson M&P Shield. BLAM!!! Darn that was loud!
Oops...ear muffs over in the backpack. A senior moment I guess. Had never forgotten ear protection before.
Anyway, learned my lesson on that one!
Make sure your muffs or plugs are in place!

The steel rings pretty loud as well without ear muffs!

I’ve done that twice.
Unfortunately, both times were with different 30-06 rifles. First was my first shot with my Garand and the second was with my Springfield ‘03.

Try discharging a 5” .44 Magnum with the muzzle alongside your left ear....in 1996.... I’d type more, but I can’t think with this ringing in my ears....

How about getting past parallel to an 8 inch howitzer? I was a new 13E (Fire Direction Specialist) and my Sgt told me to go get something from one of the gun crews. Well they were busy getting ready to fire, so I figured I'd just stand off to the side til they were done.
After I picked myself up off the ground (literally), I figured out my mistake. The ringing in my ears subsided a few hours later.

34 years field artillery. Cannoneers know what loud is.
My first MOS was 13B (Field Artillery Crewman), then OJT 13E (Fire Direction). Also 13C and 13D. Also Pershing Missile Officer and Cannon Officer. My Fire Direction Center was never more than 150 feet (50 meters) from the 155mm (M109 through A5) gun line. I always made a point of spending time on the gun line. Standing by the side of the M109 as it fired, riding the recoil inside the cab, feeling the over-pressure in my chest before the sound registered on my ears.
All we wore were plastic, triple-flange ear plugs. Same for the rifle range, M2, or gun line. In my FDC, we did not wear ear plugs. I also wore these when on the 8 inch howitzer gun line.
The VA says I've lost a little of my high frequency hearing, but no more than is normal for a man my age. I tell my wife it's the same frequency as the average American female voice.
Cannoneers know what loud is.

I can definitely relate. Same for me on all counts, including the Army issue hearing protection. I was with 8 inch as well as 155 mm units.

I am sure she accepted that as the reason for having to tell you everything twice.

I'm not sure what to attribute the majority of my hearing loss to.
Working on F-14's. Working on F-14's on the flight line and flight deck with other aircraft as well during flight ops. Sleeping on the third rack only about 3-5 feet under the #3 wire they like to catch more than the others.
Or those two 30-06 incidents that were more recent.
Or just getting older.

Nearly 66 years old and still surprise people with my hearing. Not a lack thereof. Sniffer still works pretty well too. In spite of having been a smoker for 42 years.
