Hello all,

Our neighborhood has a newsletter that is emailed to over a hundred members a week. A few months ago somebody asked if anybody on the newsletter was familiar with handling firearms and I responded that I was.

As a result in the past two weeks I have had about 25 residents send me messages telling me they had never handled a firearm in their life but wanted to learn and become familiar with them so they could be protected in their homes.

My question is what do I need to do to become certified to teach this sort of thing? I would love to be able to give back to my own community by teaching people something I feel is so important to know.

I remember somebody at my PSC Range orientation mentioning NRA classes that enabled members to become instructors. Does anybody have any more details on this? If not, does anybody have any idea on who I can contact so I can pursue my goal?

Actually, Marc is the NRA Instruction Counselor resident at PSC. Check http://www.argenttraining.com/.

I believe a Basic Pistol instructor's class is being slated for December 1.

I highly recommend Marc's classes. And if NRA Board Member Charles Cotton happens to contribute, count yourself doubly luckly.

In the mean time, you might help organize a group of interested neighbors to attend a "refuse to be a victim" seminar or something like it.

If you wait until you are certified, interest may wane among the others.

I am an NRA Training Counselor, and, as some have mentioned, I do classes for people to become NRA Instructors. The first step is the NRA Basic Instructor Training. I happen to have a session scheduled for Saturday, 9/15/07, starting at 8:00 AM in the blue building at PSC. One other thing, that if you can line up the people who want to attend a "refuse to be a victim" class, or "personal protection in the home" class...

I bet you have instructors falling over themselves to give one of those classes...

I actually prefer the PPH class, but both classes are extremely effective for nieghborhood folks that are interested...It bonds and give people the time to think about being hyper aware of what is going on in their little part of the world...

I'm sure Marc, Charles and Tom Neal would clear their calendars for a group of nieghbors...

Anyone teach these instructor classes in the DFW Area? Once my job situation gets straightened out (hopefully in the next week or so!) I want to start taking these classes. I've been doing some informal instruction, but it's getting to the point I should get some paper behind me.

HighVelocity, if someone in the area does these, we should go as a group? Or maybe even carpool down to PSC?

I took my basic classes from Jan Heath at Grand Prairie Gun Club. I also took the PPIH from Marc Gentine at PSC.

I really enjoyed Marc's class, but I realize not everyone has the luxury of time to afford a weekend in Houston. Also, Bill Russell teaches the basic classes at Shooting Gallery in Fort Worth, but he is rather expensive.

There's a few options for you. I'm sure there are others, as well. Good luck. It will be well worth your time and effort.
