Family member just called me. Has a .45 government Colt WWII vintage. Belonged to his now deceased wife's father and is willing to sell it to me.

I would have to buy sight unseen. can anybody give me a ballpark on how much they sell for in just fair condition.

Without seeing the gun, any valuation would be an absolute guess. If I had that opportunity, I'd offer a price that I was willing to gamble, with the attitude that I might be getting a great deal, or buying a paperweight. I bought a WWI 1911 just like that, back in the early 1970's. When I got it, I had a very poor chrome and gold job and was worth virtually nothing. Had it been original, it would have been a very good buy.

If you set the price way too low and it turns out you really stole the gun, you can always pay them more when you see it. I had to turn down buying a second generation Colt Single Action Army because the man didn't have any idea what it was worth and I didn't want to spend what it would bring. He had offered it to me for $1,000.

A WW II Colt could be worth $100 or $20,000. It depends on condition and any documentation that goes with it.

If the person who has it is close to Collector's Firearms in Houston, they can get it appraised there. I don't know who else in Texas can appraise that kind of collectible.
