Were you, perhaps, using new brass which you didn't resize?
Cheers,

Recoil and Power Factor
At a given power factor the contribution from the bullet and its velocity will be the same whatever choices you make to get the velocity times bullet mass product to the desired level. The only thing left to play with is the powder you use. Since the powder, converted to gas, is going to be moving ...

S&W M41
Model 41. Lovely guns! My bride and I both have one. Hers is an older model and it came with both bbls. I see no difference in accuracy due to bbl length but do like the longer sight radius. With these old eyes it can be a challenge to get far enough back to get a thing in focus! Ours are accurate ...

Precision Bullets
I, too, am a big fan of Precision Bullets. Clean, accurate, consistent.
You won't need any case lube for any brand of bullet when reloading conventional straight wall handgun cartridges using carbide dies. You might choose something like Hornady one shot to make the resizing step a little smoother ...

budget minded
I feel your pain.
Kinnylee has put together an excellent list. But you could easily elect to add some things as you go. Here's what I'd pare it down to if forced.
BBK II Electronic Scale @ $ 89.95
Dial Calipers non-D @ $ 28.00
Primer flip tray @ $ 13.95
Dillon 45 ACP/GAP 3-die carbide set @ $ 55.95 ...

What else?
I'd argue that the low powder sensor is far from a necessity.
Might even forego the powder check system, but that system does provide a certain warm and fuzzy.
You need a couple of manuals. One should be Lyman's.
You'll need a scale. I like the Pact BBK. Digital.
