He did and I also applaud his decision to allow carrying of firearms. Greg Abbott understands the danger and isn't afraid to act!

Florida's Governor did the same thing. From the same article:

"Earlier Saturday Florida Gov. Rick Scott told National Guard recruiters at six storefront locations to relocate to the nearest armory.

Scott called Saturday for a review of security at Guard recruitment centers, possibly installing bullet-proof glass at the storefronts or video surveillance equipment.

Scott's order also calls on National Guard officers to ensure that full-time members of the guard are armed. "

Some governor's are finally getting the message that a military base is a kill zone for terriorists.

Not to nit pick too much, but the headline is misleading...Abbott didn't order them to start carrying guns. He's AUTHORIZING the Adjutant General of the Guard to arm troops AT FACILITIES across the state. The actual statement say carrying ON BASE, but I would suspect it will still be at General Nichols' discretion. I agree with the idea and have never really understood the logic of not allowing military personnel to carry firearms on base.

6 governors are now authorizing their active duty National Guard members to carry on base.

"Full-time military personnel at National Guard facilities in six states could soon be armed after deadly shootings at two Tennessee military facilities raised questions about the vulnerability of the country's troops on home soil.

The governors of Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Florida and Indiana have authorized the arming of full-time National Guard members to deter attacks and allow them the ability to protect themselves and civilians in case they are targeted. "

I read on some news website that this incident may lead to more open carry, but that's just speculation on their part I think.

Anyway, I think it's a positive step to help protect our troops while at home. Just my opinion.

Been satisfied with the job Gov Abbott is doing. He just may be a keeper.

Maybe the National Gaurd should just Conceal Carry so they don't frighten the sheep. :-)

The effect of the Govenor's actions will be affected by the fact that many National Guard work on federal military installations, where it's the federal rules that will either allow or prohibit NG personnel carrying on base. I haven't heard a lot of talk about active duty military bases getting ready to arm service members on base... Likely, it'll just be the troops at state-owned/operated facilities that benefit from such orders.

Which means that the Marines and Navy personnel who worked at that Consolidated Support Agency facility would still be unarmed since it's a federal base (from what I read).

I think I agree with you n5wd.....but not quite. For the short term I agree. However, for the long term, I think that issue is still in doubt. The reason I say that is that several of the news channels(Fox, CNN, OAN, etc) have all reported similar news stories saying that the Pentagon, and the Congress is "re-evualating the constraints placed upon our military", prohibiting base personnel carrying their personal or base issued pistols. It could take an act of Congress to change that law/regulation. But due to the frequency(6 in the last several years) is justification for them to take notice, and see that the war on terrorism is happening on our shores. And it's time to change those laws/regulations to reflect the current terrorist actions.

Just my opinion, and no I can't cite specific news stories. I'd appreciate it if someone could verify my statement.

IMO, there's every reason to believe the the laws/regs might change in that respect....time will tell.

Even if congress passed a law allowing military post personnel to carry the prez would veto it.
