Sporting Clays at Flint Oak, Kansas

I've shot a lot of trap with 12 gauges, but never ventured into some of the other competitive events e.g. 5 stand skeet. That all changed this weekend when I got to try my first round of sporting clays in Flint Oak, Kansas. We were there for a family reunion and stayed in the lodge over the weekend.

WOW!!! I might be hooked. I was terrible and still had a blast. We had everything from my Remington 870 Express pump to some fancy over/unders worth more than my high school car. Everybody had the same amount of fun.

Some thoughts. . .
SPORTING CLAYS:
The varied landscapes they have created is incredible. It's like you're traveling around the US and Europe with an incredible diversity of shots. The equipment was top notch, and the scenery was beautiful. It was neat to see each shooter's strengths - some guy spick up certain directions better, different backgrounds better, etc. It really was a great camaraderie building experience - I think you all end up pulling for one another and competing against yourself. At least that's how it was for us.

LODGE:
They do have 5-stand (even lit for night rounds) and trap, but I didn't get to use those. Several in our group did and raved just as much about the experience. They also have stocked lakes for fishing, boats, hiking, and guided hunts (members and guests of members only) during the season. All of the kids had a blast at the pool as well.

CREATURE COMFORTS:
Very well furnished, including a built in wooden gun cabinet in each room. No TVs, which I liked, and nice amenities. The food is incredible, although pricey. The rooms are reasonable during the offseason. Just beware of the food costs if you plan to visit. There is a microwave in a common area, but no refrigerators in the rooms.
