Open Carry Reciprocity

I have searched the forums and not found an answer, so sorry if this has been asked/answered and I missed it.
I am familiar with the maps showing states that have reciprocity with Texas CHL, but which of these states allow open carry ? The only time I am likely to OC is while driving on a long trip (shoulder holster for access), but I'd like to know if other states allow open carry or only concealed.

If it so I am unaware of it at this time, but most states do not put a different requirement on OC more than CC and in fact, some states require less. For the most part, I think, if a state allows OC and has reciprocity with Texas for CC we can also OC in that other state. There might be an exception or two, but as I said, I am unaware of them at this time.

Just keep in mind that in some states there are in fact additional restrictions placed on OC. I can't speak to other than the ones that I'm personally familiar with but for example, in Virginia a CHP in fact has fewer restrictions than open carry which requires no license. For example, CHP holders do not have the same magazine restrictions as when someone without a CHP OCs. The TX CHL is recognized by VA, so if you have that you are covered, but if you would be in violation of any restrictions that are imposed on OC that a CHP holder is exempt from, you definitely want to ensure that you didn't leave home without your CHL that day.

Good for you for asking and researching. While I feel bad for folks that get caught up in the crazy gun laws of the Northeast, it's our responsibility to know what the laws are where we're planning to travel.

That aside, I try to avoid traveling in the "restricted" zones.

State reciprocity is great, and something we should work toward, but consider that the Federal Gun Free School Zone Act (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun-Free_ ... ct_of_1990" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) says that you (a concealed handgun licensee) cannot carry a firearm within 1,000 feet of any school PROPERTY outside the state from which the license is issued.

In other words, if you have a Texas CHL, and you go to Oklahoma (which does have a reciprocal agreement with Texas even now), technically, legally, you cannot carry your loaded weapon within 1,000 feet of any school property in that state (or any other state, for that matter).

Consider how many times as you travel that you come within 2 or 3 blocks (1,000 feet) of school PROPERTY (not the school building - the school PROPERTY [parking lot, football field, agriculture barns, etc]).

In talking about getting a Federal reciprocity law passed, let's all make sure that we understand that, in the strictest sense, it would be fairly useless without getting the Gun Free School Zone Act fixed as part of that process.

Notify your Representative and Senator.

I agree it would be nice to have this off the books but the fact is a CHL holder simply doesn't have to be concerned about being charged under this act. In fact, I'd challenge anyone to find a case where a CHL holder off of school property was charged under this act. It is a federal add on charge for gang members and drug dealers or people who commit violent crimes.

Seems to be a very rarely (never?) used Fed charge based on all the school / firearm local stories I see on the news in San Antonio. Not that I would risk it.

It is not the open carry privilege that is reciprocal. It is the license itself. In a reciprocal state all your license allows you to do is follow that state's rules, whatever they may be. I can take my license and open carry in Louisiana because that is their rule. But when we go open carry we won't be able to open carry in a reciprocal state that does not allow open carry.
