What I've seen of it, it hasn't changed all that much. Plus some interesting new features. It just takes a little getting used to. Of course, YMMV.

It took me a couple of seconds to find the link for "New Post" which is usually the first thing I would click on when visiting the forum. I found it under "Quick Links" at the top left of page. You'll also find more navigation helpers there in the drop down menu. Just something to get use to as previously mentioned. I love the mouse over feature that has been added, allowing you a sneak peek at the topic. All of the changes I've seen really help in getting around the forum. And to answer the OP's title question. Probably not since nothing is permanent. Where are the Smiley Faces?

The older version of phpBB 3.0.x had two default styles, Prosilver and Subsilver, but the new vesion 3.1.x only has Prosilver. The new look is quite different for those of us that used Subsilver, but not for folks that used Prosilver. I loaded the latest version of Subsilver and it looked terrible. Plus, some of the new features didn't work.

If you post a reply by quoting someone, as I did here, or click the Full Editor and Preview button at the bottom of the page, you will see the smilies as before.

Charles,
It is a big difference from the subsilver layout. However, I'm good with it and appreciate it. Once we all get used to it, it will be better in the long run.

The biggest difference for me is the width of the forums. Before they stretched out to the width of my monitor, now they are locked in to a narrow band. So I have large amounts of just blank space on the edges.

I've added an extension that should allow Members to change the setting in their User Control Panel to allow full width display on whatever device they are using.

The User Control Panel is under your name in the upper right of the screen. From there, select "Board preferences," then select "Edit display options." Scroll to the bottom of the page and set "Use maximum width" to "yes."

I don't know if this will address the desktop v. mobile version or not.

It's on the right side of the screen below the Recent Topics box and the rest of the Forum. The Recent Topics may or may not stay.
