Self defense insurance

Re: Self defense insurance
I just got a solicitation from the NRA for their self-defense insurance. Coverage looks decent. Least expensive package is $165 a year, $100,000 combined single limit with a $50,000 criminal defense reimbursement sub limit. Anyone have any experience with the NRA insurance? Seems like a decent deal to me....there's no deductible and spouse is automatically covered.

Re: Self defense insurance
I believe one Democratic representative wants everyone who owns a gun to have insurance.
Re: Self defense insurance
Yeah, he'd require the $1,000,000 a year plan......hoping to make it unaffordable for a lot of people to own a gun. The thing is though, with a pool of many millions that $600 per year price tag (current NRA price) would come down a good bit, so it might not work out how he thinks....and might also result in a few million more NRA members....if for no other reason than to buy the insurance.striker55 wrote:I believe one Democratic representative wants everyone who owns a gun to have insurance.

Does that include defense and fees only or will it also pay a settlement amount up to the policy limit? You should be able to request a specimen policy so you can read in detail the actual terms.

Sounds to me like both defense fees and settlement amounts up to the policy limit.
NRA Self-defense Insurance includes coverage for:
Criminal defense reimbursement and civil suit damages, up to the limit selected
The cost of civil suit defense, in addition to the limit of liability for bodily injury and property damage
Criminal defense reimbursement for alleged criminal actions involving self-defense when you are acquitted of charges
Bodily injury or property damage caused by the use of a firearm

I'm an NRA member but have never received a solicitation from them for self-defense insurance, and just now couldn't find any mention of it on their site. Could you share any link that you may have?VMI77 wrote:I just got a solicitation from the NRA for their self-defense insurance. Coverage looks decent. The link is shown by VMI77 in the post just before yours.
After considering everything else available, and known to me, I opted for the NRA program years ago. I no longer hold the insurance for reasons personal to me.

Re: Self defense insurance
A representative from Lockton spoke at the 2015 Texas Firearm Instructors Conference in Houston and he went over the available coverage. Some instructors were interested in the self-defense insurance so this too was covered, but not in as much detail as the Instructors coverage and Range coverage.
The self-defense insurance covers both criminal and civil matters, but they must be handled differently due to state law. State law prohibits a person from insuring their intentional illegal acts, so the criminal defense portion of the coverage is a reimbursement if you are not convicted. (I don't recall the specifics of what phases of the legal proceedings are covered.) You would have to hire your own attorney, then seek reimbursement later. It also covers defense costs other than your attorney. (Again, I don't recall the specifics.) Coverage for attorney fees and other defense costs are up to the limit of the coverage you purchased.
Civil suits are handled just as are all other civil suits. The insurance company hires an attorney for you, pays defense costs, and defends the case. They also cover any settlement or jury award up to the limits of your policy. As with all liability insurance in Texas, the policy will not cover punitive/exemplary damages.
Chas.

Thanks Jim! Was looking for an actual NRA link so didn't get the connection.b322da wrote:Glockster,Glockster wrote:I'm an NRA member but have never received a solicitation from them for self-defense insurance, and just now couldn't find any mention of it on their site. Re: Self defense insurance
Good info Charles.
It is important to realize, this policy is an NRA endorsed policy and Lockton is the NRA endorsed agent/program manager. Usually there are fees shared with the endorsing organization. It is not a policy sold or underwritten by the NRA. Hence,, the link to Lockton.

One of the reasons I am considering it is my assumption that it will benefit the NRA.mojo84 wrote:Good info Charles.

Re: Self defense insurance
I'm relatively new to the forum and see there is some rule forbidding naming specific vendors. Yet everyone is talking about the NRA insurance. So which is it? We can name vendors or we can't?
As an aside, there are numerous other great products, both insurance and pre-paid legal services (2 different things). Can we name them or can we not name them?

Re: Self defense insurance
You can mention any other insurance companies that provide self-defense insurance, if there are any. I think you already know the the answer to the pre-paid question. In case I'm wrong, no, you cannot mention pre-paid legal programs.jrene wrote:I'm relatively new to the forum and see there is some rule forbidding naming specific vendors.
