U. Wisconsin official: let's stop prosecuting shoplifting

Post by VMI77 »

A University of Wisconsin-Madison official claims laws against shoplifting are just an excuse to over-police minority communities.

“I just don’t think that they should be prosecuting cases… for people who steal from Wal-Mart,” said Everett Mitchell, director of community relations for the university, during an on-campus event. “I don’t think [with] Target or all them other places, them big box stores that have insurance, they should be using the fact that people steal from there as justification to start engaging in aggressive police practices, right?”
Mitchell, a former assistant district attorney, offered shoplifting as an example, suggesting that communities of color may prefer that police refrain from enforcing laws against theft from large retail chains because responding to such crimes leads to an increased police presence in neighborhoods where shoplifting is prevalent.
Warning: if you follow the link to read the entire article don't look around too much at the other stories, they will just leave you sickened by the lunacy at what now passes for institutions of higher "education" and despairing for the future of our country and the world.

Not a hard to leap to make considering the DOJ now prosecutes based on race/ethnicity and religious/political affiliation. Why should a little technicality like breaking the law enter into the equation?

Liberals are funny until you put them in charge, then they're downright dangerous.

You can see where this would lead: "Ok guys, today we will empty the Walmart on 3rd street. Harry, you have the 18 wheelers scheduled to arrive at 9:00 right?"

Liberal: "Walmart MUST BE FORCED to keep the store open on 3rd street. If they are allowed to close it, where will the disadvantaged in this neighborhood be able to shop?"

When I read stories like this I get irritated because nobody points out the reality behind what this guy is saying. What this guy is saying is that minorities (specifically blacks) can't help themselves. It's in the nature to steal from businesses. And since we need to be considerate to these people, the businesses must pay for the losses. It's a slap in the face to every black person, and yet no one points that out. They all nod their heads and think that's a good idea without any thought to the underlying insult that is built in to the assumption. It's the same insult that's built in to every liberal assumption that supposedly helps minorities. Everyone knows, they say, that minorities need a helping hand when it comes to going to college, so we'll create affirmative action that grants them access because of their color. Everyone knows, they say, that minorities are simply incapable of doing simple things like getting IDs, so it's completely unfair to ask for an ID to vote. You're disenfranchising them.

Why no one points this out is complete mystery to me.

What about those that are advantaged whom shoplift, shouldn't they get double the punishment? :biggrinjester:

I like the idea, but it is itself a tad cruel. I like it!

I think this is a great idea.
Will be interesting to see how fast those stores stop serving those communities.

Excellent experiment in the effects of policy making and social economics.

Two thumbs up.

The herd is broken. Those plastic free shopping cards are apparently inadequate at legalizing enough theft so lets just decriminalize theft altogether and let the Ferguson Shopping begin. Somebody needs to turn out the lights...

Sadly, the guy saying this is a former DA. How many of his colleagues hold these same views? I guess it explains the lack of prosecution for the "little" things.

:iagree:

I'm pretty sure nobody points it out because it would hurt someone's feelings and then the honest soul would be unemployed.

I hope most people do realize that if you don't prosecute and enforce the small scale laws, the same people will just do those things and then do more. They will get more criminals committing crimes one step more severe. At what point do we stop feeling sorry for these criminals?

Why not just walk into a bank for "an unauthorized withdrawal?"

Disadvantaged people shop at Walmart.
Walmart has banks.
Walmart has insurance so it shouldnt prosecute crime.
Let's rob the Walmart bank.

Makes perfect sense.

I have a better idea. Let's stop policing these high crime areas altogether. Law of the jungle reigns.
