There was an article a couple of years ago about NYPD safety procedures. To prevent accidental discharges, their guns are modified to have a 14lb trigger pull.

Of course the unintended consequence is nobody can hit anything (except innocent bystanders). Plus every officer grew up in NYC believing that guns are uncontrollable death machines that must be feared. The first time any of them touched a firearm was in the academy.

I used to live right across the Hudson from NYC and we only got NYC TV news. It was far more common for an innocent bystander to be shot than it was for the intended target to be shot.

I'm going to call this one.

The guy was struck in the calf. I would be willing to bet that all 84 shots missed and what hit him was either a ricochet or fragments.

Lotsa Texas boys growing up get to shoot tin cans with their .22s and get to be pretty good shots.....NYC boys not so much :(

The obvious answer is to take guns away from the cops.

in the mid 90's while commuting back and forth from Vegas to San Diego, just south of the rest area on I-15, CHP's stopped a car and the driver took a shot at the officer then ran off into the desert. Officer emptied his weapon (15 rounds) and hit the runner once.... in the heel, I-15 shut down for about 8 hours while they searched the desert for him.... during one of the hottest day in summer...

i missed it by about 5 mins....

I have been looking into quality 9mm defense ammo. Many tout the Gold Dot +P as being used by the NYPD. I guess the NYPD will need to start looking for a round that can be effective even when they miss

Good point. This is another example that shot placement matters more than caliber or brand of ammo.

the cops don't seem to get very much training each year although the article did say that another range was being built. I suspect this is adrenalin in action with a minimum in training. Most cops never fire their weapon in a real situation in their entire career. Considering how large the NYC force is and how minimal the training capability they had (at least in 2012) it is amazing that even one shot hit.

I guess the bad guy didn't realize that Taurus has a recall on his gun. Not safe to carry until checked by Taurus.

If we are going down the road that they do not have sufficient training and have been deprived of such opportunity to shoot tin cans in their youth, is it also a reasonable conclusion that someone should charged with negligence for providing them guns? How about the officer themselves for not making sure they are properly trained.

I'm not saying this is the case. I'm just throwing out some food for thought if we are to believe they are trained insufficiently.
