This is an important issue on *all* college and university campuses -- please spread the word to all, everywhere you can. It's important that we make our voices heard so that rules are few and far between. We're responsible citizens, as demonstrated over the last 20 years! There's no logical reason for licensed faculty, staff, or students to not be granted this right anywhere on any public institution's campus.

Well, I sent a reply back on Monday asking if I could get any more information on who the appropriate parties are, and what plans are in place to form a task force. I've been seeing through various news outlets that several other institutions are already working in their task forces and having open discussion on the topic (TCU, Texas Tech, UT at least, probably more). As far as I know, there's been no such indication from my campus on the topic, just the email that was sent out by the president a day or two after it passed the House. I haven't gotten another response yet.

You've probably already seen this, but I thought I'd point out, just in case:
I will say that it's somewhat disappointing that the way to find out the group has even been formed or met is through a news resource. At least there's some kind of motion. Figured there would have been some kind of internal email, or an addendum onto one of the various newsletters we have that a group has been formed.
Will keep an eye on it for sure.

But debate over the factious measure didn’t end when the Legislature gaveled out in June.
Or maybe he doesn't know what "factious" means. I don't think the measure was passed by a dissenting minority.
Or maybe I don't understand plain English. Representative John Bryant, many years ago, told me as much the day he advised me to seek professional help. Crazy me, I had a recorder going when he endorsed some utter falsehoods.
Just got done with the first Town Hall this evening. I will say that I am pretty surprised at how many people were there that appeared to be for campus carry. There were several individuals who had issues with the law, and said that it made them feel very uneasy simply because guns are bad. (not a direct quote...)
There was one rep from OCT there, I did not speak to him directly, however I will say that he was mature, spoke his piece, and did not get out of hand at all. I didn't get his name. I think the only time anything got close to getting out of hand is when one of the anti-gun attendees started to argue a bit with a vet who was speaking.
I have the impression that the chair of the task force is very balanced on the issue. He started the town hall quoting himself being quoted saying "That ship has sailed" in regards to being for or against campus carry. It is simply now about where on campus that there will be gun free zones. I think, from discussion, that there are at least two locations that will get 30.06 posted -- a dorm that TAMS students live in (high school kids enrolled in college), and a day care that is on campus. I believe the Day-Care would be gun free by the letter of the law anyways, but I don't have the statute or bill in front of my right now. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the buildings that does counseling and mental health gets a sign, as well as some of the labs.
There were tons of questions on whether or not faculty could make their classrooms or offices gun free. Answer was no.
The UNT policy proposal is due to the President by Dec 15 or so, and the Regents will finalize the policy on Feb 1. 1 meeting down, 6 to go.

I am a UNT alum and am curious which labs you think would become off limits. If you're talking about the science labs then that is very disappointing. Students might have a lab between other classes or at the end of their day that effectively means they cannot carry anywhere the entire day because it will be unreasonable to return it to your vehicle and then retrieve it afterwards.

I'm really not sure specifically. There wasn't much talk about specific chem/bio/etc labs, just that "there's chemicals there, they might go boom" kind of talk. I agree that it would be disappointing if random labs around campus get posted, but the chair of the task force was adamant that UNT was going to comply with the law -- and that meant that there would be no rules that 'effectively nullify the law.' I'm almost sure that the daycare and tams dorms will get posted. Someone had the thought that any designated testing centers should get posted too, so that cheaters aren't carry weapons into the testing room...
