MS: officer sits with man trapped in burning car until final breath

Post by ELB »

Mississippi police sergeant William Bright:
“We went through probably 8 to 10 fire extinguishers. I kept spraying them on the dash and his leg area, but the heat, it was so hot. The fire just wouldn’t go out,” he said.

Sgt. Bright says at one point the flames grew above his head. Despite his own fears, he stayed with that man; talking with him and praying, until he took his last breath.

Not trying to criticize, but why didn't the officer cut the guy's seatbelt and drag him out of the car? Whatever further injury he might have done to the victim by moving him.....including amputation of the trapped limb(s)..... would have been less than the poor guy dying in his seat. Or was there simply no time?

Again, not criticizing.....just wondering if there were absolutely no options. I recall a victim trapped in a crushed car under a collapsed freeway following the big SF quake of a few years back who had his leg amputated in situ to free him from the car.

I presume the vehicle was mangled too much to allow the victim to be dragged out, and/or the victim was pinned in the seat by more than his seatbelt. Other reports say his SUV collided with a semi-trailer rig before going off the road, so the front end was probably bent quite a bit.
