CNN Report on Guns in America

Post by Glockster »

Just watched it, it being driven by a report that Clinton will today announce a major plan that she has and would put in place to "make gun ownership safer" and to "curb violence." So they interviewed Daniel Webster, Director of the John Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research. One point that I thought was "interesting" was that he estimates that about 50% of gun transactions are conducted without any background check (private sales) and his claim that 85% of gun owners want a requirement for private sale background checks to close that "loophole". This is one of the five things that Clinton will supposedly announce today that she will do through executive order if she's elected, along with addressing increased ownership standards modeling the California law. And there was discussion of a national handgun purchaser licensing system. And on and on.

It won't cost her my vote.

According to John Lott that's pure hokum. Yes, you take a poll and produce a large favorable response with a general question so calculated, but when you cite specific legislation the support falls dramatically.

Perhaps they could do that with drug dealers on street corners too... those are almost all "private sales" ... that'd close that "loophole" right? What took them so long to think of this solution to stopping illegal drug sales?

For some reason I see this coming down to some type of database of gun owners.

:iagree: Absolutely, they have to get Americans to register their firearms and demonize others, otherwise their efforts are all for naught.

:iagree: That's for sure. And there are still drug addicts out there which claim drugs are not addictive but neither one can stop buying or consuming! It would actually be an interesting study to find out how many shootings would not have happened without drugs.
