Pro Mag M&P-9 17rd - GTG?

Somehow managed to misplace one of my factory mags (hate that!). While I wait on some better priced S&W mags to come along, has anybody used the Pro Mag (SMI-A12) 17 rounders?

I'll undoubtedly get jumped on by someone somewhere who's had a Pro Mag actually run right, but the vast majority of experiences I've ever heard with Pro Mags have been horrible. Between myself and friends I can think of probably a dozen failed experiences with them across various platforms. The only product of theirs I'd even remotely recommend are Mini-14 mags, and even those are hit or miss.

My suggestion, Pro Mags are suitable for door stops and paper weights, beyond that they're worthless. That's my $0.02 at least.

I'll take honest opinions over the alternative any day of the week. I ended up ordering a handful at $15 a pop. Figured it won't be too painful if they're no good. I'll report back after a range trip.

Searched high and low for any other S&W mags I had stashed away. No joy, but did find 3 brand new Glock 34 mags that I don't remember having. May stick some other mags in the same box, just in case they're spontaneously reproducing.

I have a 32 rnd promag for my M&P 9c and I've basically had no trouble with it. I have found that it likes brass the best - steel and alum casings tend to not feed as well in the top 10-15 rounds for some reason.

I haven't bothered to test it with JHP ammo since it's mainly for fun on the range. $15/pop for 17rnd range mags seems like a decent choice if they run halfway decent and aren't planning on competitions or self defense.

I've found that a thorough cleaning and lubing with Mag Slick solves most of my magazine problems. I've only ever had one (1911) magazine that I couldn't get to run right after cleaning and treatment.

As for the Pro Mags, I've never gotten M&P from them but my Mini-14 (before I sold it) and AR mags run fine.

There is probably something to be said for using them to practice malfunction drills. If you are looking for a mag to use for practice, I don't see that it matters, go for it. I wouldn't depend on Pro-mag for defense or concealed carry.

I bought 2 or 3 Pro-mag magazines of a few types years ago and they all had problems. I stopped buying them and will not buy them again. For pistols I stick with factory magazines. Never had trouble with those. The only aftermarket mags I have been happy with were Mec-Gar but they are OEM for some manufacturers.

In the long run, good magazines last a long time. Don't go cheap if you will depend on them to work. Same as with guns.

Of course, your mileage may very on this...but I have had ZERO issues with any of the Pro Mags I've purchased. I have two 17 round mags for my M&P 9, three 25 round mags for my son's Marlin 795, even a 7 round mag for my LC9s. Previously I had two 7 round mags for my Bersa Thunder .380 before I sold it. I've also tried but sold a Pro Mag for my Taurus TCP .380. All have worked flawlessly. In the Pro Mags for my M&P 9 I've run brass, steel, and aluminum cased ammo, all with no issues.

I agree with sigm4. Why waste money on something that is more likely to not work than to work? Plenty of lightly used factory mags on the market if you want to save a few bucks. Check the ar15 equipment exchange.

Report on Pro Mag M&P 9 17 rd magazines, product SMI-A12.

They're seemed well made. Fed fine. Except for one little problem. In two different M&P pistols, all three mags would leave one round in the magazine after slide lock.

That's unacceptable.

I've already picked up replacement S&W magazines. The pro-mags are going back to the vendor.
