Garden Valley School District, a rural district with just 200 students, voted earlier this year to purchase four rifles and 2,000 rounds of ammunition for self-defense.

I read this story a few days ago and have mixed feelings about it... while i applaud the district for taking a proactive solution like that, I cant help but wonder if that should be a logical solution, having a teachers armed with a concealed weapon i think would be better, just my thinking is that if your one of the teachers with the rifle in your class room, where would it be... locked up in a closet if they have one? locked in a visible gun rack, a safe in the corner of the room... I dont think it would unlocked an left readily accessible to students.

2nd pondering point.... who would be the first person shot if a shooter came into the room.... with elementary kids, my thinking is that he/she wouldn't bother with the kids first, take out the bigger threat, the adult.... high schools kids could be different story, how close to the door are they sitting...

think a few months back i read an article that mentioned that some districts allow the school resource officers to keep an assault rifle locked in the trunk of their vehicle.... does a whole lot of good if they are clear across campus if they need if immediately....

just my thoughts

My Heavens!! They've set up an ARSENAL of ASSAULT WEAPONS and trained a small MILITIA for a small rural school!! Who in their right mind would endanger the kids with the presence of all these instruments of death and destruction?? -- sarcasm off --

The liability question always tickles me in juxtaposition to the whole reason for doing away with gun-free zones.

I think the school is doing it right. There is no need to put out details of how or where the weapons are to be stored. Why on earth would you give any potential BG any more info? Just knowing there are rifles and trained teachers would probably buy this school a "pass" from any outside shooter.

If I were setting it up, I might, quietly and unannounced, allow the trained teachers to carry a concealed handgun, if they are licensed. After all, a pistol is what you use to fight your way back to your rifle.

Seems there are some level heads in the mix & strongly suspect that there will be a few handguns being carried by staff.

Small school near my hometown recently armed and trained a handful of teachers. Some have mace in a locked container some have handguns in a container, only the teachers with handguns and the admin knows who has what.

Also they added a pretty large sign out front that mentions their school staff is armed.

....We have 95 percent of our families with weapons, because it’s a hunting community. So those students grow up – I just sat through a class with fifth graders doing hunter safety – it’s all part of the community and the culture that weapons are present....
There it is! Guns and hunting are part of their culture. Garden Valley Idaho ain't Kalifornia, Chicago or New York city.

Haven't seen the PM yet, but why would you not post it if they put a sign in front of their school announcing it?

I am curious about which school it is because I would like to add it to another thread where I have been keeping track of Texas schools that either authorize teachers with CHLs to carry or have a School Marshal program, or both. There is a news article that says there are 70 schools that do this, and I have found articles for about 35 or so, always on the look out for another one.

ELB, why publicize the info at all. I realize that will deter most who mean to do harm, but, I believe that will also entice some brainless sh8thead "to make a statement". The fact that you are on this site says that you probably understand & possibly agree. Personal opinion here is the allowed concealed carry of a firearm deters the BG that would do harm to another because they are not sure who out in the real world will end them. Information can be a good thing but people must remember that it can benefit both sides. Most schools that I have seen news reports about or visited, (I have grandkids ;-) ) have a system of locked doors that must be passed thru to get into the school. That creates a commotion giving trained, willing & able personnel a chance to respond w greater & a deadly force. Sorry, I will step down now and thanks for letting me vent.

Union Grove ISD also armed a unknown number of staff and advertised it with a huge sign in front. If I wasn't on my phone I could post a pic. Google it.

My son built 4 AR15 M4-type carbines for the Keller ISD school resource officers when he worked at a local Keller gunstore. Of course, they were not select fire, and therefore not "assault rifles".
