.22 Short VS .22 CB loads

Post by puma guy »

We've had a critter raiding out garbage can recently. I figured it may be a cat but more likely a possum. The scoundrel was large enough to get the lid off and turn the can on it's side. I had loaned my live trap to a friend so I was waiting to get it back, but Whah! Lah! I came home from a luncheon today and noticed the trash bag I wrap over the rim was no longer there and instead was down in the bottom of the can Along with it I see curled up, asleep in bottom of the can a large possum. I quietly let myself in and retrieved a .22 rifle and some ammo. The can is on a breezeway that is closed on three sides with lattice on the side facing the street. To keep noise down I grabbed a .22 short and two CB Long rounds. I loaded the short into the chamber manually and put two CB longs in the tube mag. I had the end of the barrel lined up as best I could on his head ( the trash bag was partially covering), but just as I pulled the trigger it moved and I hit just below it's eye. It was squirming and I had to use the two CB rounds to make a good it by the ear. While neither the .22 short and CB long were loud, the .22 Short was quieter than the CB Longs. The Short sounded about as loud as my Sheridan pellet rifle; the CB Longs sounded more like a .22 shot. i.e a "pop" RIP Mr. Possum

I have used cci 22 cb shorts to take out coons, possums and grackles. They work great. They are louder then aguila colibri and super colibri but they also have a little more power. They are hard for me to find though. I don't even use the colibris anymore because they are so weak. The super colibri is one I stick to because it's easier for me to find. Winchester makes a 22 long that is 29gr and 770 fps and that works about the same as the cb shorts and is quite common in the Academy's in my area. I pick a box of those up when ever I see them. CRITTERS BEWARE!!!
