Post by stormbringerr »

i sent a request for an application for a chl on july 5 2007 and i still havent gotten anything back. why would this take so long. since looking around i have found a different address for the application request to be sent to than the one i used.they both go to the dps but po box and zip code are different. shoul i send another request to the new address i found? the first one may have been obsolete.the new one i found was on the dps site the first one i used was not.the letter i sent never came back though.

Go to this link click on continue at the bottom, take the on-line test and pay the fee with a credit card. Your packet will come in about a week after you take the on-line test and pay.
With packet in hand contact a CHL instructor try and find one that does ever thing in the class the day you go most will take the photos and finger prints while in the class and after the class they go and shoot so when the class is finished all that is left is to mail in the finished packet and wait for you CHL to come back to you in the mail.

Costs:
$140.00 to the State of Texas
What ever the Instructor charges
What ever the Range charges to shoot
What ever the gun cost, for test must be a 32 cal or larger
What ever ammo costs
(I rented a gun at the range for my test and bought the ammo at the range also, my total cost was $280.00 for Packet, Instruction, gun rental and ammo!)

It takes all day and some for the class test and shooting expect 10 to 15 hours for class, the on-line test takes about 15 minutes or so!

Good luck!

If you just want an application package, wait until you take the class and get it from your instructor.

If you want to fill out the application and pay online with a credit card, then go here: CHL Application

Online test? Is that the question sheet to determine if you are eligible?
Ø resist

Take away the second first, and the first is gone in a second.

Yup. 'Course, you'd know better than I would. ;-)

Only thing I'd add for stormbringerr is to let the date of your class dictate which way you go with the online registration. When you make your application request and pay online, you're assigned an application number and PIN. It can take a while--like two or three weeks--to get your physical application packet back in the mail, the packet you'd need to take to the CHL class with you. If you've applied online, you really want to have that packet with you at the class...using a generic packet supplied by the instructor might cause some confusion at DPS if they've already assigned you an app number and PIN.

So if you haven't yet scheduled your CHL class, or the class is at least three weeks away (preferably a little more), the online app is a great way to go. If you already have a class scheduled in August, I'd confirm with the instructor that application packets will be available at the class, and I'd just plan to use one of those. In the meantime, of course, if the one you sent off for in the mail shows up, you can use that one.

im starting to get confused already.do i take a test to get the application packet or do i take the entire written test online and then take the tests by an instructor for shooting and so forth later.Sorry im probably making this more complicated than it should be. i like things to be simple. not necessarily easy, but simple and straightforward.

If you register online, you are only answering eligibility questions, not test questions about the law. Actually, you are answering only "agree" or "Disagree" about eligibility questions, plus name, rank and serial number questions you would expect to see an an application.

Does this answer your question?

Chas.

Here are the questions:
Please answer "Agree" or "Disagree" to the following questions:
1. I have not been convicted of a felony.
Agree Disagree

2. I am not charged with the commission of a Class A or Class B misdemeanor or an offense under Section 42.01, Penal Code, or of a felony under an information or indictment.
Agree Disagree

3. I am not a fugitive from justice for a felony or a Class A or Class B misdemeanor.
Agree Disagree

4. I am not a chemically dependent person.
Agree Disagree

5. I am not incapable of exercising sound judgment with respect to the proper use and storage of a handgun.
Agree Disagree

6. I have not in the five years preceding the date of application been convicted of a Class A or Class B misdemeanor or an offense under Section 42.01, Texas Penal Code.
Agree Disagree

7. I am fully qualified under applicable federal and state law to purchase a handgun.
Agree Disagree

8. I have not been finally determined to be delinquent in making a child support payment administered or collected by the Texas Attorney General.
Agree Disagree

9. I have not been finally determined to be delinquent in the payment of taxes or other money collected by the Texas Comptroller, Texas State Treasurer, or tax collector of any agency or political subdivision of this state.
Agree Disagree

10. I have not been finally determined to be in default on a loan made under Chapter 57 of the Texas Education Code.
Agree Disagree

11. I am not currently restricted under a court protective order or subject to a restraining order affecting the spousal relationship, not including a restraining order solely affecting property.
Agree Disagree

12. In the 10 years preceding the date of this application, I have not been adjudicated as having engaged in delinquent conduct violating a penal law of the grade of felony.
Agree Disagree

13. I have obtained, or will obtain, a handgun proficiency certificate by completing a course of instruction taught by a certified Handgun Instructor.
Agree Disagree

14. I am at least 21 years of age (or between the ages of 18 to 20 plus meet the additional eligibility requirements).

Sorry poor choice of words on my part saying it was a test on the DPS site. its just simple questions and answers I guess it depends on your point of view on if questions on eligibility is a test or not.
