How to ship a gun to myself?

Post by Soap »

I live in Texas now but I'll be visiting my home state of North Carolina very soon. I'd like to ship a handgun to myself, and avoid taking it to the airport all together. How do I go about doing this? I have a carry permit which is good in both states. I also have the place I'll be staying at for a few weeks. Can I use UPS/Fedex?

UPS and FedEx will require you to ship it overnight if they know it is a handgun. If you do not tell them it is when you ship and it gets lost or stolen you are out of luck because they will not pay. Read the ATF info at the link below.

For UPS you need to go to one of their hubs, not the outlets.

BTW, I would check out the state/local laws in North Carolina to make sure there is nothing forbidding this. I doubt there is but you never know.

You can ship second day air for a little cheaper. Box it up and have a family mail it to you the day you land in North Carolina. I guess your will need to buy ammo in North Carolina or that will have to go UPS/FedEx separate from your pistol.

6. May I lawfully ship a firearm to myself in a different State?
Any person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in the care of another person in the State where
he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to
the owner “in the care of” the out-of-State resident. Upon reaching its destination, persons other than
the owner must not open the package or take possession of the firearm.

Wow, I was under the impression that it was highly illegal to ship any gun anywhere, except through FFL's

You can ship a firearm to anyone in the State of Texas. No FFL needed.

It depends on the person working there, many do not know their own company policies and will require it to be overnight.
