Howdy says he found some there. Can't comment on that particular Walmart but in the past two years I've seen 22 at Walmart exactly twice. Once in the Victoria Walmart, the last box of which was being purchased by someone in front of me at the gun counter, and once at the Cuero Walmart.

I used to check different Walmarts several times a week and never found any 22. Stopped bothering after about a year and now only check when I happen to be in Walmart for some reason. The second time I just happened upon a 1,000 round box at the Cuero store that looked like it had been set back where it wouldn't be seen.

Maybe I've just had exceptionally bad luck.....but it hasn't seemed to manifest itself at other stores I visit far less frequently, like Cabelas and Academy, where on several occasions I've found 333, 500, and 1,000 round bricks in stock. Funny that, I visit Walmart probably 20 times more often than Cabelas (no Cabelas near where I live) yet I've been able to purchase 22 there one time in the last two years, but have found 22 at Cabelas on about half of my visits.

I do check out the local Academy about once a week and that's another interesting contrast. It's right across the street from Walmart and it ALWAYS has 22 in stock.....usually just 50 round boxes (in the past with a 3 box limit and now a 10 box limit)...yet I've never found ANY in stock at the Walmart across the street. I checked Walmart this Tuesday....no 22....crossed the street to Academy....bought ten 50 round boxes, leaving plenty on the shelves.

It's pretty clear to me that at a lot of Walmarts 22 never even makes it to the shelves for customers to purchase....not all that's coming in anyway....maybe a few token boxes here and there.

What do you consider expensive? Our local academy usually has 50 round Aquila or other 22 for, I think $2.99, a box. That's about 6 cents a round and I haven't seen any cheaper in bulk. Cheapest bulk I've seen in months has been about the same price....1,000 round box of Winchester for $60. Bought Federal HV Match at Academy this week at $5 per 50....about 10 cents a round.

This is the Wal-Mart on North Fry. The Mills Mall one NEVER has .22LR. You can get 3 boxes of whatever type .22 they have so the 333 boxes is 999 rounds. I only took 2 last time because I don't want to horde and there were still several boxes left.

The Academy in Sienna Planation had plenty over the weekend, and the one on 59 in Sugar Land had quite a bit up on the counter as well.

Carter's Country (59 @ Wilcrest) usually has it in stock as well.

6 to 8 cent around is what I consider bulk price. Last week I found 22lr the same price as 9mm per round at a local gun shop. My local wal-mart 11 miles away never has 22lr. Academy or gander is 70 miles away round trip and only occasionally make it there.

Stopped by my local Academy and saw two boxes of CCI Mini Mag for $7.49/100 on the shelf so I asked the clerk for them. He reached down into a box on the floor where I saw several cases of various .22 ammo. There were several cases of various .22 ammo on the floor behind the counter. He handed me two from the case and I queried if they still had the 2 box limit to which he replied, "No, 500 rounds." Gimme 3 more sez I!

Yes, unfortunately, the prices are jacked up at a lot of local stores, especially if they don't have to compete with a store like Academy. I won't pay more than 10 cents a round.....and that only for the harder to find ammo like mini-mags.

The most i will pay is 6 cents a round. Anything over that is price gouging. Most of the time i get my 22 when i go to lousisana at the cabelas there.I have only gotten a decent deal on ammo here in houston a few times.

????? I thought 22lr was making a comeback. My academy has them out on the end caps in mass supply not behind the counter. Buy what you like a normal prices. ?????

There are several places on the web where one can buy .22 ammo; e.g., Champions Choice, Champion Shooters, Palmetto, etc. However, I'm afraid that the days of nickel .22 ammo are long gone.

I spent a couple of hours prowling around Cabelas in Buda this afternoon. They seemed to have ample stocks of .22 in various makes, sizes, etc.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

Spoke to my Dad this evening, he told me a new Academy opened in Indiana.

They had brick of 500 for about $28 out the door (limit 1/day).

I like 22 Shorts. I have been able to grab a few 500 round boxes at my Academy. Came home with 500 rounds earlier this evening. Glad to find them and most folks don't care for the shorts!!

Still behind the counter at the Academy here. They're out like the rest of the ammo at the Cabelas in Buda.
