Wilson Combat Ambi Safety and new 1911

Post by tms119 »

Alright so just bought myself a new Colt Defender. The only downside is that I'm a southpaw (I know I know I'm sorry) and after a lot of reading I went with the Wilson combat Ambi safety.

I'm wondering if anyone here has one on their Defender or if they have handled one with the Ambi safety.

Also was curious if anyone can give me a reasonable price of what I should pay a smith to install the safety. I'm in cedar park so if anyone has a gunsmith recommendation too, feel free to let me know.

Thanks all!

I'm sorry I can't help you with a cost estimate. The one time I had it done, a friend did the work for me.

I just wanted to say I think you made a good choice going with the WC safety. Of the different methods of retaining the right side lever, I have the most faith in the extended hammer pin method. :thumbs2:

Having installed a few ambi (and other) thumb safeties on 1911's, I can't imagine paying more than $50 for the installation.

I've never had one installed by a 'smith though, so my numbers may be way off.

It's less than a 1/2 hour job in most cases, assuming you have the tools and have done one.

Wilson parts are usually fairly easy to fit, although I've run across one or two occasions that I was quite sick of the "file and fit" process by the time everything clicked :)

If you are in Cedar Park- take it to Hank Fleming in Austin. Alan Tillman works there also on a part time basis. Both are well known and excellent 1911 Smiths.

I had a wilson BP ambi (wide paddle) put on recently and paid $50. The price included contouring the paddles down to my specs as well. (took mine to dallas because I was going to be there anyway)

You'll need to post a pic to prove you really bought it! lol :fire
