I have a two-acre pond that is spring fed for most of the year. In dry summer months (like 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) it is stagnant. It gets pretty turbid in the summer but is clear down 6-8 feet in winter.

I have a Berkey Imperial for when the progressives hit the fan. I also set up a sediment filter to filter the pond water through before using the Berkey. Have enough filters for a very extended time. Hope to never use it.

We have food for 9 months not counting the freezer.

I am thinking about getting a solar array on my house.

Have deer all over the place, black bass, crappie, bream, and catfish in the pond.

We have a garden planned as soon as my current job ends. Have a bunch of heirloom seeds stored.

We need to stock up on canning supplies. Mrs. Anygun has already produced world champion class wild muscadyne grape jelly from the vines that grow wild on our place. We have to wrestle the grapes from the deer.

I am cultivating some muscadyne and mustang grapes to transplant on a hillside I recently had graded to a more useable slope.

We also planted some fig trees last year that have already produced.

Being able to purify water is thinking ahead, because if you are not ready (and know how) to do it when the time comes, it will probably be to late to acquire the tools to do such. Also, do not forget to store food that does not need refrigeration. Do not forget prescription medicine. Do not forget first aid kits. Remember your personal hygiene, toilet paper, soap, etc., etc.. If you have enough to last a couple of weeks that is not very prepared but it is a start.
Being prepared for storms or Stuff Hits the Fan, is more than water, guns, ammo and food.

This is the ticket , tbryanh got it right Polar Pure. A little pricey but unlimited shelf life and can treat thousands of gallons . Household bleach is next in line , cheap and efficient more bulk to store and limited shelf life But you can be using it daily with laundry , etc and rotating it out. Boiling , heck wood or fire "material" to burn ain't that hard to come by .

We live on a small lake , up to 4 years ago I thought water would always be easy . The last 4 years proved me wrong , the lake was dried for 3 years . The drought changed my mind . In purifying water giardia is one of the hardest parasites to kill

Basically, as soon as whatever happens actually happens, you put this bladder in your bathtub and fill it with potable water. 65 gallons of drinking water while gravity fed delivery of municipal water still works. Don't forget your water heater. Usually about 40 gallons of drinking water. More than a few days? Berkey is you friend.

I should order a couple more myself.

Even for those who aren't worried about financial collapse / EMP / nuclear war / large scale terrorism / tyranny /whatever, it makes sense to prepare for short term emergencies like hurricanes, tornados, etc. Some extra food, water, batteries, first aid applies, and the like are just a core part of taking care of your family.

While this thread has so far been semi focused on water preps, something larger and more constructive to consider is not just the physical preps, such as food - water - bullets - first aid - construction materials - fuel - etc.
The most powerful prep on the market is one money can not buy - a network.
Knowing who you can count on in a pinch, be it friends, family, neighbors or a larger group. I have been fortunate in developing such a group, to be effective such a group must go beyond the if /then phase and develop as a community from the start. We know who we can count on in times of trouble by relying on one another in times of plenty.
This past week has been dedicated to helping one of our own move into a new home after they suffered a fire a few months ago. Next week we may be building a chicken coop on another members land, or getting the kids together for a bbq.
A true community doesn't require insignia or codes - it works because we know each other as family. And no matter how deep your pantry is, no matter how fortified your perimeter is - a single person, a single typical family - simply doesn't possess the skills diversity needed to maintain a quality standard of living.

community of like minded people will 10 fold the ease of getting through situations.

That doesn't take too much imagination. Orcs are bad and must be dealt with. I like the idea of balancing "give 'til it hurts" on one hand, and "show no quarter to those who take by force" on the other hand. The preservation of society depends upon it. I honestly don't know if I'm being foolish or wise on this.
