Converting a closet to a gun storage area
I have a closet that I would like to use for extra gun storage. I am envisioning a standard locking knob door, and then a steel mesh gate of some type inside the door. The idea would be to make the door look as inconspicuous as possible. I'm looking for any good, cost effective ideas.

Just don't mistake concealment for security. The door should still have a secure locking system.
Keep calm and carry.

That's one of my concerns. Murphy doors are interesting, but I would prefer a locking regular door that opened to a steel gate of some type.mr1337 wrote:Just don't mistake concealment for security. The door should still have a secure locking system.

psijac is correct, but you can have both. I have a closet very similar to the one shown above, and I have a jewelry store-quality safe hidden behind it (my wife owns a jewelry store, so we have two high-quality safes - one in the store, and one at home - rather than a typical 'gun safe'). Sure, most thieves won't know that it even exists, but those who do find it will have to be better than your average thug to get into it.mr1337 wrote:Just don't mistake concealment for security. That *is* cool, though not particularly stealthy IMO.
We have a walk-in closet I would like to convert to a Safe Room i.e. a place to go if a tornado hits or a BG is in the house, and which also contains our arsenal, so I'd like not only to figure-out how to reinforce the door, but also the walls. There must be a bulletproof material that is easier to work with than steel...

How about ballistic rubber? I read somewhere that they are $120 a sheet, but I can't find any pricing info on their website.TomsTXCHL wrote:That *is* cool, though not particularly stealthy IMO.

Re: Converting a closet to a gun storage area
Thinking about a safe room, my home defense plan includes having each of the kids go into their closets. I am in the process of installing deadbolts on all closet doors for this reason. Not perfect, but it will at least slow down any BG's until help arrives (ideally me with a 12 gauge if other parts of the plan work as designed).TomsTXCHL wrote:That *is* cool, though not particularly stealthy IMO.

You can line your safe room with panels of "Shot-Blocker": http://www.alro.com/divplastics/plastic ... ocker.aspxSoccerdad1995 wrote:Thinking about a safe room, my home defense plan includes having each of the kids go into their closets.
