After One Year in Space Scott Kelly Returns to Earth

Post by WildBill »

NASA astronaut and Expedition 46 Commander Scott Kelly and his Russian counterpart Mikhail Kornienko returned to Earth Tuesday after a historic 340-day mission aboard the International Space Station.
They landed in Kazakhstan at 11:26 p.m. EST.

“Scott Kelly’s one-year mission aboard the International Space Station has helped to advance deep space exploration and America’s Journey to Mars,” said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.
“Scott has become the first American astronaut to spend a year in space, and in so doing, helped us take one giant leap toward putting boots on Mars.”

Scott Kelly has a twin brother [a retired astronaut]. They will perform medical tests on both to help determine the long effects on long term space travel.

I saw a video of Astronaut Kelly being carried off of the space craft.

Charles Bolden had an interesting way to put it "putting boots on Mars." Perhaps he didn't want to say "putting men on Mars."

Muscle loss probably and also cardio will more than likely be affected.

,NASA is very big on making sure they exercise in space so the muscles, including the heart muscle, doesn't atrophy. Will be interesting to see how well he does now that he is back at 1 G.

I think that bone loss is a big concern. I recall NASA doing some studies when John Glenn was on the Space Shuttle.
Just looked it up. Kidney stones are also a concern.

His brother should have been left in space with all the other space trash.

Osteoporosis would be the biggest problem so you are correct. I also thought that 365 (366 with leap year) days to a year, not 340 but that's government for you.

I corrected my post. Wouldn't want to get sued.

Dang! I should have been an astronaut!

I am sure that gravity will return him to his pre-flight height.

Astronaut Scott Kelly, recently back on land after a stint on the International Space Station, is retiring, NASA announced Friday.
Kelly's retirement takes effect April 1, NASA said. Kelly, who now holds the record for the most consecutive days spent in space
by an American, returned to Earth March 1 by way of Kazakhstan and arrived in Houston two days later.

Has anyone calculated how much older Mark is than Scott now, due to relativity? You'd think that a year circling the earth at 17,150 mph and 254 miles up might be long enough to yield a measurable result, wouldn't it?
