Opinions on Sig P938

Post by Shadow41 »

Hi
I'm interested in the Sig 938 because of it's small size, but I don't know of a range in my area where I can rent one to shoot first. I normally carry either a Shield 9 or a BG 380. Is there anyone here that has shot the P938 and maybe one or both of the S&W's that can share their experience or thoughts on how these compare when shooting?
Thanks

I don't own a Sig 938 but have shot my Brother's. I like it.

It is just slightly larger that my Kimber Micro Carry (.380). Kimber is bringing out the Micro Carry in 9mm very shortly. They should start showing up in Gun Stores in May.

There are several features about the Kimber that I like better than the Sigs, but the Sigs and Kimbers are pretty much based on the old Colt Mustang anyway.

I definitely give the 938 high marks, it is small, light, shoots accurately (at reasonable distances). Not too snappy in recoil and reliable with good ammo.

Personally, I'm waiting on the Kimber to come out.

During my CHO class a gentleman had a brand new Sig 238 (or whatever that little .380 is), and his front site fell off twice. :headscratch

Twice, on a brand new pistol, during quals. :rules:

I know Sigs have a great reputation, and this might not be the best representation of the brand. I think you would get better spend on an XD or Glock for EDC. :cheers2:

Unless you want a 1911 in which case you need to provide a purchase price range so we can offer the 18million opinions on which is best.  LOL.

I just got a 938 and had a shield .40. I loved the shield ergonomics, weight and size, I kind of miss the gun. I recently got the 938, its an absolute blast to shoot. The price tag hurt a little and ill probably get the 7 rnd mag but other than that, I have no regrets. Its a well built pistol and fills the role of a BUG quite well.

Bottom line, you cant lose with either, but I went 938 since im switching to all metal guns.

I have both. I bought a Ruger LCP a few years ago because I wanted something I could carry in my pocket at times where other concealed carry methods were impractical. I did not like the LCP for several reasons so sold it and replaced with 938. The 938 Is similar size to LCP but far superior in every way. I later bought a Shield, partly because I am a big S&W fan boy. I like them both and carry them both although you can buy two Shields for the price of a 938.

I aquired a P938 from my wife. She had shot one at the range & decided she wanted one so birthday present last year had me getting it for her. After the first 100 rounds, her knuckle was hurting. Seems tat the ambi safety was hitting her knuckle. With her arthritis it became an issue so we shopped around for a different gun for her and she chose the shield. She really loves it. So I got it for her and I took the 938. Makes a great BUG

I carry a 938 daily and find it is easy to conceal and light enough to be quite comfortable.
It shoots everything I have tried from FMJ to XTP hollowpoints without stacking or failures to feed.
Accuracy is good well past 25 yards and close in it is excellent.
I carry with Fed. 124 Gr. hollow cavity loads and use a 124 gr FMJ as my practice load.
I estimate about 600 rounds fired since I bought the gun. That's the good news.
The bad news: It went back to the factory to get the trigger to work, BUT SIG did OK on the repair.
If asked for an overall rating... "9"

We bought a Sig P938 for my wife because she had tried a P238 at the range and liked it. The 938 does have more kick. The bottom of the trigger pinches her finger so she actually has to wear a band-aid at the range. The 938 does not pinch my finger because I have much larger hands. The hammer actually wears a spot in the fleshy part between my thumb and finger.

One of the best features is the ease of racking the slide. My wife can do it with no problems. Accuracy wise, both my wife and I have had good success at the range. I really like the small size and feel.

We've run about 400 rounds through it. We had some failure to fire problems with the first few rounds but that could have been the cheap ammo we were using. I've fired about 25 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense through it with no issues. We were starting to get a very good feeling with the reliably when we had a failure to eject last week at the range. Not sure why but the ejector clearly left the spent casing in the barrel.

We are going to run a 200 more rounds through it then take it to a gunsmith to see if he can help with the pinching trigger.

If you are near me, send me a PM and maybe we can meet at the range.

I carry a P938 often. I have also been known to carry the following: P220, P226, Kimber TLE II, Kimber Pro Covert II, XDm-40, XDm-45, Glock 20, FN FNX-9 (recently sold), Ruger LCR, Smith 442, Ruger LCP, and more.

In regards to the front sight falling off twice, Twice I tell you! The problem is that Sig sights are pressed on lick a Glock or XD, if it falls out of the cut once then it will require special tools to put back in place properly. If you can put it back by hand the cut is wrong or the sight is wrong for the cut. I would almost be willing to bet the OE sights were replaced by the dealer or another party for the customer.

If your in the Lubbock to Midland/Odessa area I would be willing to let you try my P938.

If the spent casing remained in the barrel (chamber) then you probably meant it had an extraction failure. If you take it to a gunsmith have him check the extractor tension.

I carry my P938 every day, as a BUG to one of my 1911s or as primary when wearing the larger gun is not practical. I have complete faith in it.

OP: If you tell us where you are located, someone here might be willing to let you shoot theirs.

If the trigger is pinching your trigger finger, that is more of a training issue than anything else. The only way I can see getting pinched is if you're placing your finger at the bottom of the trigger. One of the tricks to improving accuracy with the P238/P938 is to keep your finger as high on the trigger as possible - actually rubbing the frame.

Unlike the P238 (which has an internal extractor), the P938 has an external extractor. Tension is supplied by a spring and is a lot less critical. I would inspect the extractor hook for problems. It could be broken / chipped or just clogged with crud.

First, thanks to everybody for replying. I'm from Waco. I'm looking at the 938 to replace my BG380. I looked at the 938 at a local shop a couple days ago and really liked the way it felt. I also liked the trigger way better than the BG's. I like the idea of having both primary carry guns with the same 9mm caliber too.

Not sure where your location is but,, Athena Gun Range (awesome & professional) is at Beltway & I-10 (west side) Houston & they do rent the Sig 938 but it stays rented out. They suggest you call ahead if that's the only purpose you wanna go there for.
Worth a little drive if you're not in the area.

I had a BG380 also, it is no comparison to the 938. 938 wins in every category except weight. The SIGlite night sights are very nice as well.
