Smith and Wesson AR15 Sport

Post by carlson1 »

Is there any of you that have a S&W AR15 Sport that can give some reviews in it. Good or bad?

I got one a few weeks ago. I only have about 100 rounds through it but so far, no issues.

I am really looking on opinions on how it will hold for like a patrol rifle.

RPBrown did yours have a dust cover and forward assist? Grab-a-gun has them on sale for $629.00. I was wondering if this was the going price? My son is wanting an AR for patrol and he is on a limited budget.

That is definitely a good looking rifle. I read several reviews, and all had good things to say about it.

Looking at pricing, I found one listed for $589.00 at GunBuyer.com :

http://www.gunbuyer.com/p-58570-smith-a ... 10202.aspx

In enlarging the picture, it does look like it has both a dust cover & a forward assist. :thumbs2: That needs to be verified though.

[Note: I know nothing about GunBuyer.com. Never bought anything from them. But the price is right. ]

If you go to the S&W website, the picture there for the sport doesn't show a forward assist nor dust cover. Reviews I saw on youtube also had neither of those things.

I bought the SW M&P AR-15 about a month ago.
Model M&P15OR Rifle
This does not have the iron sights, as I planned to put optics on it.
This is $200 or so more than the Sport model.
Has the forward assist and dust cover.

So far, I have only shot .223 through it, but it is chambered for 5.56.

I have put about 100 rounds through it, and absolutely love it.

You linked to the Sport 2, not the plain jane Sport.

You are correct. The link I posted from GunBuyer.com for $589.00 is also the Sport 2, and that's what I've been referring to all along. ;-) But thanks for clarifying. I think I'd rather have the Sport 2 myself. :cheers2:

Carl, yes, mine had both the dust cover and forward assist. My wife also got me a Mossberg MMR that I like as well
Since you are in Irving, go to Roy's Pawn Shop on Irving Blvd. He has great prices and if he doesn't have what you are looking for he will get it for you, usually within a day.

As many of you have noticed, there is the original Sport, and the Sport 2. The original Sport did not have the forward assist or ejection port cover. But the first generation had a 1:8 twist, 5R rifled barrel which was very odd for a "budget" rifle. Then, S&W did away with the 1:8 barrel on the Sport, and went to a 1:9. Reason given was production time for the 1:8 barrel and that they would only be used on a more expensive rifle, the M&P 15T.

Now , S&W has come out with the Sport 2, and the only difference between it and the last generation of the Sport is the forward assist and ejection port cover. The addition of these two items takes away much of the argument the naysayers had against the rifle, although real world, civilian usage of the rifle show that neither are required. I have had my Sport strapped to the roll bar of my jeep, thrown in the back of my pickup, or strapped onto my four wheeler as I chased pigs across my deer lease in west Texas. The rifle would be covered in dirt and dust and not once has it failed to feed or fire. And when I am eradicating hogs, I use cheap, steel cased ammo to boot.

Accuracy wise, with good commercial ammo, it is a 1 MOA rifle. With surplus type ammo, expect 2 to 3 MOA. With 62 gr Silver bear, I bet it opens up a little more, but haven't shot that on paper to measure... minute of hog is good enough.

Personally, I think the Sport 2 is the best bang for the buck in a complete rifle. Sure, you can piece one together for the same price, but you don't have a manufacturer like S&W backing the product.

Just noticed the need for "patrol rifle". For this use, I am going to say "it depends". First question is if his department authorizes the rifle for patrol use. If not, then you already have your answer.

If they do allow it, you will need to find out what ammo the department uses. For example, if they utilize the Hornady TAP 75 gr round, the 1:9 twist may not be fast enough to stabilize the round. However, if they use a 55 gr or 62 gr round, the 1:9 twist will work fine.

Many departments authorize other rifles in the S&W lineup that come with a 1:9 twist, so it may not be a deal breaker... but something to be aware of.

You saved me some money! Thank you. These folks were very easy to work with. My son has been wanting a patrol rifle and since he paid sergeant me and his mom thought we would help him out a little bit.

Thanks to everyone for all of the information. What makes this Forum so great is being able to get different opinions and then drawing your conclusion with some comfort in mind. Y'all are fantastic folks.
