2014 - 2015 Silverado and Sierra Vibration Issues

Post by tx mountaineer »

Thought I would share this issue in these trucks. My coworker just went through the repair and buyback with the dealership. Its worked out for him so far as his new truck does not have a vibration issue.

My son's 2001 GMC Yukon LT with 100,000 miles slightly vibrates at 68 mph. Solution. He does not drive at 68 mph. We went on line and read all the stories of new tires, balancing, new brakes, etc. etc. which did not fix these people's problem. He decided to live with it.

My guess was hardened grease on the u joints causing them to be slightly out of balance.

my 2008 sierra does the same thing - 155k on it, and I can feel it in the front end. I know that it is not the drive shaft. In the last year I have replaced steering tie rods, both bearing assemblies, rotors... and I still get vibration up through the steering wheel. I really just started about 7-8 months ago, from a polite little hum to a prety good whirring sound, and I replaced all of the above, plus changed the tires in November (Michelin LTX-MS... so no crazy mud tread tires to cause the vibration/noise).

It is getting worse. I first noticed it up around 70, and then it would trail off by 50. Now I can feel it slowly creep its way to lower speeds. I noticed yesterday that it whirrs all the way down to 20 or so now. When you talk about 20 MPH, you have eliminated the source of the vibration harmonics in the steering, suspension, driveline, brakes, all of it. It is just spinning too slowly to make it happen. The only thing left is bearings and tires, and both of those have less than 10-15k on them since replaced.

ETA: My next truck will be a Tundra... when they finally start making fully boxed frames. Whenever that might be.

I think you are on to something with the bearings. I know you said you replaced both of the front bearings but you might be surprised how a rear bearing going out can sound and feel like it is coming from the front. I have experienced this myself and replaced front bearings (specifically front left) with much anticipation only to have the wind let out of my sails during the post-repair test drive. It is amazing how well sounds/vibrations can be “transmitted” through the chassis. Have you noticed that the pitch/frequency changes in long, flowing curves or in quick sharp curves?

When you say that “you” have replaced the listed parts, do you mean that you personally installed them or you had a repair shop do it for you? This should be fairly easy to validate with a jack, a couple of jack stands, and a socket crank handle (to spin the rear wheels while suspended).

I see, based upon your profile location that I pass right by your neck of the woods every day on my way home from work. If you are interested in a second set of eyes (and ears) and have 15 minutes to burn in a Wal-Mart parking lot, or if you prefer a police station parking lot, or something similar, I would be more than happy to meet you somewhere with the above mentioned tools. No disassembly or test driving required. It doesn’t cost anything but a few minutes of time. Totally your call.
I did it all myself. I was thinking of doing just what you recommended. I have a floor jack and jack stands, I was going to lift the front and spin both sides. I could just as easily lift the rear and do the same. the next day I have time to do this is Sunday. If I can't hear anything funny, I will take you up on your offer.

Yikes. just watched a youtube about replacing rear bearings... looks like quite a job. Looks like a similar process to when I helped a buddy replace an axle shaft in his jeep, just add the process of replacing bearings on top of it. O'reilley will loan me the puller if necessary, that should make life easier.

I'l go to the mall parking lot tonight and do some speedy turns to listen for pitch change.

My 2001 Silverado with 100,000 did this. Cure was a new left front spindle and wheel bearings. YMMV

I recently sold my '03 GMC Sierra but it also had the vibration issue but not as bad as what was in the video on that link. I never put much effort in solving it after I tried balancing the tires, new tires, and new shocks.
