S&W 1911 Performance Center or SA 1911 Trophy Match

Post by FastCarry »

Welp, I think I'm in love with 1911s. I'm considering selling my beloved XD Service and adding another 1911 to my collection.

This one will be geared towards match/action shooting so I'm considering the performance center or trophy match. Both are about 1200, I'm leaning towards the PC but would love to hear opinions.

Both are great guns. S&W incorporated some modern touches on their 1911s (external extractor and series 80 FPS unless it's the E series pistols). Springfield is more of the original design (internal extractor and series 70 design). If you want a more modern design then go with the S&W, but if you want the original design, then go with the Springfield.

Well... The one that came had issues that my gunsmith couldnt fix so I sent it off to SW. I just called them for an update since its been 3 weeks, I guess they couldnt fix it either - they are replacing the gun entirely.

Im happy they are replacing it but its off putting that a Performance Center gun had to be replace 2 weeks after owning it.

If you don't mind sharing, what type of issues did you have? I have been looking at the PC also, (it won't be anytime soon SWMBO says not in the budget)
But any pointers you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm thinking clocking extractor, it held case tight but would let go early in the ejection process causing all kinds of havoc and damage to the casing and mag feed lips. It shot on a dime however, I could key hole nearly every shot at 5 yards.. shot 10 rounds and it looked like I shot three into the target.

What XD do you have ? and if you part with it, how much you think you'll ask for it ?

OK thanks, I haven't read about that anywhere but I my review process has been limited. Like I said, probably not going to happen in the near future anyway. I appreciate the feedback. :tiphat:

No biggies - when I quoted you, didn't realize how long ago the post was started. I have a couple XD's and love em, so thought I might be able to pick up one more at a good price.

I hadnt either.. its an external extractor so its probably not "clocking" but "clocked" from an assembly/fitting miscalculation. Enough to replace the gun instead of being able to fix it. Ill have the new one at the range as soon as I get it so ill report back.

Miss the capacity for sure and it was a fantastic shooter, I may look into an XDm 9 eventually, 19+1 sure is enticing.

I've been looking at the XD mod 2 series... probably will go with a 9... not sure about size ie service model or compact.

Hopefully the new one doesn't have the issues.
One big reason I always lean towards sa when considering a purchase is they have such great cs, I made a boo boo on one of my 1911s and stripped the grip bushing and they still sent me a shipping label and fixed it for free and back in my hands within a week.
next time I'm going to just have it go to the custom shop after the issues fixed and get some work done

The problem with sw performance center is they just aren't what they used to be back in the 90s and before. I really enjoy my older performance center guns though.
