Anyone with 1911 compensator knowledge...

Post by Ryan »

Ok guys and gals, I have a 1911 with a bushing comp. And before I get started, I didn't buy the compensator for recoil purposes. I had a look in mind when I bought this gun and that is why it has a comp. I know barrel bushing comps don't really work all that well, if at all. Again, not why I purchased it.

That being said, when I go to the range with this gun, I usually shoot no less than 300 rounds through it. Usually more. The last time I went to the range, we put close to 700 rounds through the gun. When I went to clean it that night, there was a ton of black residue in the comp. And this stuff would not come off. I tried everything I could think of and even left the comp sitting in cleaner over night to try and loosen it. Well, that didn't work. A wire brush wouldn't even make the stuff budge after soaking all night. I finally wrapped some scotch-brite around a reamer and was able to get some of it out that way. But not all of it.

So, do any of y'all have any ideas of a cleaner that might work to loosen that stuff? Or any other ideas of how to make it easier to remove that residue in the future?
For reference, I used Gunzilla to soak it in.

Thanks in advance!

What is the comp made of? Is it aluminum or steel or something else? Do you have a sonic cleaner?

I don't know anything about an after market compensator or its benefits for a 1911, but IMO it sure detracts from the beauty of that gun.

That is one nice looking 1911. :tiphat:

It is made of stainless steel. And no, no sonic cleaner. But I will look into getting one. I'm open to suggestions. Let me know what y'all use.

Stainless should clean up just fine. Just be sure to get one big enough. They are kinda like safes a little. As soon as you get one in the size you think should be sufficient, you'll find something you'd like to put in it that won't fit. And then you discover there is a bigger model you could have gotten or a new one that is bigger. Maybe a small one for small parts and a large one just for the big stuff.

I happen to have a Lyman Turbo Sonic cleaner, but any cleaner with the proper solution should work. I've also recently been turned onto MPro7 cleaner. It is not for the sonic cleaner, but works very well on its own.
