Pawpaw,
Unless, I need to use my pre-paid cell phone, I leave it turned off.
But, I do wonder if it can still be tracked unless I remove the batteries?
Also, it seems to me, waaaaaaay back when I bought it there was some mention of it NOT having e911 service capability.
As to it containing GPS, I don't know how that could be as I mentioned in an earlier thread, the darn thing only cost $20.00. Is GPS technology so inexpensive now mfgs can afford to install and still make a decent profit on a $20.00 sale?

Without GPS, they can probably still use the cell towers to approximate your location. As for tracking you when it's turned off...probably urban legend. The one question might be...is it really turned off. iPhones mark the location they were last in when the batteries quit, but some super secret satellite beaming rays at SIM cards, I call bull.

Yes, GPS technology is that inexpensive now. If you bought yours long enough ago, it might not have it but I believe they all have to have it now.
Understand too that you can't truly turn off most modern cellphones. It would require a real power switch to do that. I'm not aware of any that have that. They have a button that you generally have to hold down (or a menu selection) to "turn it off". The phone is then monitoring the simple button you press to turn it on. What else is going on while it's off, I have no idea.

ScottDLS & Pawpaw,
Thanks for your responses.
I'm not one to be terribly concerned about being 'tracked', but it's interesting to know if one can turn off a cell phone.
I'm not technically astute regarding cell phones/smart phones, but I have a hard time believing if I pull the battery I can be located. Unless, there's a capacitor that can act (if you will) as an energy source when the battery is removed. (though as Scott pointed out, maybe they can track my last location per the cell towers...)

You'll also notice how many new phones make it very difficult to remove the battery.

Just seems like a very sad state of affairs in our nation today that it is so common for so many average, ordinary citizens to have to give ANY time or effort (even if it's only discussions) to figuring out whether or not they are being tracked by their government, and if so, how to defeat that tracking. How in the world did we get to this point? Our Founding Fathers have got to be turning over in their graves.
