First Gold Medal of the 2016 Olympics goes to USA

Post by puma guy »

USA shooting sports off to a good start with first place in the Womens 10M air rifle event. Virginia Thrasher scored 208, one point over China to take the Gold in that event and also the first Gold medal of the Olympics.

And she's only 19 years old. I watched the final rounds, and she was poised and cool as a cucumber. A perfect shot scores a 10.9, and her next-to-last shot was a 10.8. She needed a 10.4 on the final shot to clinch it...and she shot a 10.4, mathematically eliminating the 34-year-old Chinese competitor. Ginny will still be only 31 when the 2028 games come around. There'll be many more medals for her.

BTW, she evidently became interested in shooting after her grandfather took her hunting when she was 14, and in short order she was out-shooting both her grandfather and her father.

Hillary may decide an air rifle is a "weapon of war" and add it to her list of weapons she wants to ban oh so badly.

Sorry, I could not resist. :biggrinjester:

I saw the Dan Patrick interview with her. This girl is a hoot! 5 years from novice to Olympic gold. :patriot:

She's up again on Thursday in the women's three-position 50-meter smallbore competition; starts at 10:00 a.m. Central. I think it can be streamed here if it isn't televised: http://stream.nbcolympics.com/womens-50 ... ions-final.

They recently practiced here in North Texas, at a range in a little town called Saint Jo (Montague county). Here's a very brief article from the local paper : http://www.gainesvilleregister.com/comm ... 22c68.html
