In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law to pursue a natural justice.

As with any con game, they try to distract then deny, deny, deny the truth. Distinctly I'm reminded that Hitler was very charismatic and convinced people that what they saw right before their eyes was actually not happening. When it comes to self-defense or national policy, “It is the greatest art of the devil to convince us he does not exist.” - Baudelaire and “Don’t think of persuasion as something someone does to us; persuasion is an internal process, not an external one. We persuade ourselves. A predator merely manipulates how things seem to us.” – Gavin de Becker in Protecting the Gift, Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe (and Parents Sane). Distinctly related, took the family to see Hillary's America movie last night.
“Hope is an expensive commodity. It makes better sense to be prepared.” - Thucydides
