The really bad thing would be that the "ping" would let the bad guy know you were out of ammo and he could rush you (if he could hear anything at all after 8 rounds of 30.06).

The really bad thing would be that the "ping" would let the bad guy know you were out of ammo and he could rush you (if he could hear anything at all after 8 rounds of 30.06).

The very first round I fired out of mine was without hearing protection. It was not on purpose either. One of the older guys at my club was telling me some really interesting stuff about it and showing me a few things and when it came time to fire that first round I forgot to put my ears on. I don't think the ringing stopped for several months. I can't imagine how anyone during battle could hear much of anything, let alone that little "ping" from the empty clip being ejected.

I do not keep mine loaded for HD, but wow! I can just imagine the sound, but I can't imagine anyone still breathing after being hit with 1-8 rounds of 30.06 in CQB. If they were still coming for whatever reason, I doubt one would have time to load another clip and would just have to beat them with the rifle.

Until you run out of ammo, or they catch fire.
Between the noise, adrenalin and probably being blind from the muzzle flash, you will not be able to reliably determine if the threat is over until the cops get there. Emptying the magazine out the muzzle takes very little time if you are really trying.

As far as their being an issue with you emptying your magazine, I don't think many LEO's would consider that a problem. In a typical LEO/Bad guy shootout how often do you think the LEO's magazine is emptied? Based upon videos and news stories I've seen there's lots of rounds expended, from both sides, often with no one on either side actually hit.

My LTC instructor said same as others "fire until threat is eliminated", but don't walk over and double tap in the head after the perp is down.

If there is a threat, you fire once. When the sight picture returns, if the threat is still in the sight picture fire again. Repeat until there is no longer a threat in your sight picture.

Like i tell my wife shoot till the mag is empty , i remember the LTC instructor tell my group that 90 % of people shot only once survive but my thought is if they are wanting to kill me then they get the same .

Using deadly force is allowed as long as there is a threat. The objective is to stop the threat and survive. When there is a threat, the instinct will be to either fight, flee or freeze (the latter is the one that often gets left out). The bad guy sees you as a threat and will have the same reactions. Both the bad guy and the intended victim may empty their weapon. Neither may hit anyone.

Telling someone how to react, without teaching and practice, is probably a waste of time unless you are prepared to spend sufficient time practicing on the range and in a classroom discussing tactics. It is difficult under stress (and probably in poor lighting) to aim, defend, cover, assess the situation, fire, repeat, repeat, repeat....... and keep up with rounds fired and the reload point.

The first time I fired my weapon in a real life scenario, it was at night and I could not recall seeing the muzzle flash or hearing the round. I was carrying a Colt Trooper revolver loaded with .357 magnum ammo. I did have presence of mind to stop firing when the threat ceased. And I was lucky.

Yes, fire 'til the threat is eliminated. Maybe that one round knocks him down or scares him so bad he runs away, but don't count on it. My 2 cents worth? In one shooting I was involved in, one deputy emptied his magazine, but it was the one, well-placed shot from a reserve deputy's revolver that ultimately stopped the bad guy. You never know until the adrenaline hits. Contrary to that, my off-duty partner hit a home intruder 5 times with .357 magnum. The guy still continued in and broke the bathroom door off the hinges trying to reach him, before he dropped from loss of blood. PCP makes you crazy and unresponsive to pain. And people don't stop and die instantly from one bullet like on tv - most of the time, lol.
