.22 cal LR / M&P 15-22 Sport Rifle

I saw this beautiful plinker in the most recent issue of "Guns and Ammo" magazine.

I want one.

Before I plunk my moola down, do any of you own one and if yes, how do like or not like it?

I have one that I use my Sparrow on. It is the most fun that you can have with your clothes on.

I shoot CCI Standard Velocity and my kid's Red Ryder makes more noise than this suppressed M&P 15.

In all seriousness, my shooting has improved with using this rifle, especially my iron sights and standard AR trigger skills.

Mags are great and plentiful, last round hold open, no complaints about anything.

I got a beretta ARX which is just as reliable as my 10/22 if not better.

As AJSully noted these rifles are a blast. Mags are cheap and plentiful and are a better design than those used by the various .22 conversion uppers. The gun will run just about any factory ammo and is accurate enough to be a blast to go out plinking with. Throw on an affordable red dot from some place like Primary Arms and it's awesome.

One thing to note, spend the extra $ for the MOE version as it comes with Magpul furniture and includes a QD socket molded into the receiver. It's worth the premium over the base model.

I've had one for a few years although don't shoot as often as is I'd like. Too many of my other children scream, "pick me" when I go to the range. I recently added a suppressor and use subsonic Ammo. The IMO manual recommends against certain Ammo (think 22s can be a little Ammo finicky) or subsonic but it cycles fine with the suppressor.

The thing I've yet to figure out is where to buy it at the lowest possible cost?

The cheapest I have found recently was at Grabagun $355. I think that's about what I paid in 2014 from them. Shipping is a flat $5.95 to your FFL plus Texas sales tax. They were nice people to deal with and I have bought several guns from them. They have many FFL's already listed in their data base so I didn;t have to get my FFL to send info to them since they were listed. You may find a better deal as I have seen some specials on them in the past from online sellers. As for shooting it I can only say every one that has shot it has a hard time handing it back.

I have an M&P15-22. It's great fun. My only regret is that the muzzle isn't threaded for a muzzle device, so I can't use any of my suppressors on it. But other than that, the manual of arms is pretty much identical to my regular ARs so it's a good way to practice, there is little or no recoil so novices like to shoot it, and it is fairly reasonably accurate. It doesn't seem to be partial to any one kind of ammo, and the magazines all seem to work reliably. Also, the polymer receiver makes for a lighter weight rifle.

They are cheaper now than when I bought mine. While I think that the Ruger 10/22 Takedown Rifle is a pretty nifty piece of kit, basically, the M&P15-22 can fill that role since it takes down like any other AR........which relieves me of the desire to spend even more money.

Ditto on about everything the others have already pointed out. It's a great little rifle, easy to shot, lots of fun, and same basic operation as a regular AR type rifle.

I should have gotten my daughter a single shot or bolt for her first rifle, but I went with this figuring that she would much easier transition to other rifles. I didn't consider my own training at first, but it has also worked well for that. We haven't had any trouble with any of the common brands of ammo we've run through it. This one also does not have the threaded barrel like TAM's and if I get another one it will for that option if I do decide to get a suppressor.

I got our about 3-4 years ago and paid about $425-$450 for it. Anything under $400, I think, is a good-great deal on this rifle.

I had one of the M&P's, but someone wanted it worse than I did, so sold it to them. Great functioning rifle. I didn't like the Mossberg as it was not as much like a true AR. Looked kinda like one, but mags were weird and functions were different.

Originally the first models of the 15-22 came unthreaded, however that changed within the first year of production; now any of the models you see with a flash hider are threaded 1/2x28. No need to step up to the performance models.

It is important to note though that S&W hasn't figured out that .22 aren't threaded to the same length as 5.56, as a result you need a spacer due to the longer threads on these guns to ensure you don't get into the baffles of most .22 cans.

I'm not sure every M&P 15-22 with a flash hider is threaded. Many I see in the catalogue ie The Sports, don't list threaded barrels even with flash suppressors. Make sure the suppressor has flats on them for a wrench.
