The left lies about everything. Truth is a liberal value, and truth is a conservative value, but it has never been a left-wing value. People on the left say whatever advances their immediate agenda. Power is their moral lodestar; therefore, truth is always subservient to it. - Dennis Prager

Re: Looks Like I'm Getting A New Doctor
Medicare gave me a new view of doctors. We lost our doctor of 20 years after we went to Medicare. He won't accept it. I scrambled trying to find another that I could trust and lucked out with the one that we have now. He takes a different approach to our care and I'm not sure that it is better than what we had but at least we have a doctor that will accept our coverage and seems competent.
There is no way that I would let the gun question get in the way. "Of course not" would be my answer. He can write down what I said, whether he believes it or not. I would similarly parry any follow up questions. There are not a lot of options out there for doctors that accept Medicare and I'm not up for shopping for another.

Re: Looks Like I'm Getting A New Doctor
It primarily seems to be a question pediatricians ask. My mom said they asked her and dad when I was little as well. Apparently if you answered yes some doctors would drop your child as a patient. They simply answered no and went on about their business.C-dub wrote:Our pediatrician had a couple questions along this line a year or two ago. I don't remember if we left them blank or just said no. There were no questions like this on any of this years forms.
My own doctor has not asked anything about firearms yet.

Got a response email from the doctor today:
GOOD MORNING. I UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERN AND THERE IS NO LAW IN REGARDS TO ASKING THIS QUESTION. IT IS SIMPLY AN OPTION ON THE SOCIAL HISTORY SECTION THAT WE ARE ABLE TO ASK. YOU HAVE THE CHOICE TO ANSWER IT OR NOT. THE NURSES ALSO HAVE THE CHOICE WHETHER TO ASK IT OR NOT. MY NURSE LITTLE STEPHANIE IN PARTICULAR DOES NOT ASK THIS QUESTION OF MY PATIENTS DUE TO HER PERSONAL CHOICE NOT TO ASK IT. I KNOW IT MAY BE IRRELAVENT TO HEALTH CARE AND AN INVASION OF PRIVACY SO I WILL ASK ANY NURSE WHO HELPS OUT MY NURSE WHEN SHE IS BUSY TO PLEASE NOT ASK THIS QUESTION. I WILL ALSO EXPRESS THIS CONCERN TO MY HIGHER UPS TO HAVE THIS QUESTION REMOVED FROM THE SOCIAL HISTORY. THANK YOU FOR EXPRESSING YOUR CONCERN AND WE WILL BE WORKING ON THIS ISSUE.

Re: Looks Like I'm Getting A New Doctor
I had my annual check up/blood letting yesterday at Christus Mother Francis in Jacksonville. Our pretty little nurse, Kendra, asked me questions she has never asked before; e.g., spell words, write sentences, describe location, repeat after her, dizziness, falling, draw picture, etc., etc. We asked what is this about and she replied it's something new that we do now to check for onset of dementia and nerve condition. I asked Kendra if she was going to ask about guns and she said, "....no, we'll never ask that question....". Went then into see the good Dr. who examined me and said nary a word about my empty holster. He knows I CC. Yes, we're getting a new Doctor because ours is retiring at year's end.
BTW, we got my lab report last evening and I passed the physical; except that we're still waiting to see what my Mg level is.

Re: Looks Like I'm Getting A New Doctor
For those of us that have doctors that do not ask the intrusive questions, we are fortunate. I am confident, at some point down the road it will be a requirement to ask many intrusive unrelated questions.
Here is an article that gives some insight into where we are headed and why I believe it's so critical to control and manage as best you can weekday goes inn your medical record. It's a somewhat technical article but one can get the general idea when you see the terms, "CMS", "APIs", "data sets", "access", "required", "mandated", "share" etc.
APIs in healthcare are now a certified health IT system requirement

Re: Looks Like I'm Getting A New Doctor
I have never been asked about guns in the home, but I think I know what I'll say if asked.
However, I was asked a new question at my most recent annual checkup: "Do you feel safe in your home?" I didn't really think about the implications of the question until later. What if a child said, "No." I wonder where the scripted protocol goes next. Sounds like a fishing expedition.
Next visit, I'll ask the doctor about that line of inquiry.

Re: Looks Like I'm Getting A New Doctor
I've never personally been asked but I understand that our pediatrician has asked children before (age 10, with no parents in the room) if they had guns in the home, are they locked up, etc. Luckily we aren't there yet since our children are younger but there is going to be a long conversation with that doctor if/when my children are asked things like that without me present.
Re: Looks Like I'm Getting A New Doctor
Heck, if my doctor asks me if I have any guns, I plan to steal Stephen Wright's old joke and lean close and ask in a conspiratorial whisper "Waddaya need?"

My answer would be "depends on whether or not I broke something of my wifes"Legionnaire wrote:I have never been asked about guns in the home, but I think I know what I'll say if asked.

Q. "Do you feel safe in your home?"
A. No, thats why I have cameras, burglar alarm, dogs, and guns. Do you have a better idea?
