For those that get hung up on semantics

Post by mojo84 »

Would you feel comfortable buying magazines for your guns from a company named Gunclip Depot?

http://www.gunclips.net/mags.html

It may be a fine company but I thought the name was interesting and figured some would enjoy sharing their thoughts.

I refuse to buy mags from the folks at the Fort Worth gun shows with a huge sign that says "CLIPS". They do not have one single Garand clip on the table...

This is my rifle, this is my gun.... Sorry, I was having flashbacks to basic training.

Of course, in Field Artillery AIT I then learned that "gun" meant "howitzer", and not what we had been taught in basic. The hand held firearms were still called "rifles" or "pistols". Now on this site, we all refer to even itty bitty little pistols as "guns". Words have meaning, but some meanings change based on context. In the end what really matters is whether we can understand what the heck we are all talking about.

Personally I don't mind if you call a magazine a clip as long as it is clear that you are talking about that thingy that holds the bullets, aka rounds, aka cartridges, aka ammo units, one each. I'll ask for clarification if I'm not sure what you mean.

What about "shells" in my former career any soldier who called small arms ammunition "shells", or spent small arms brass "shell cases" would have found himself locked up on a charge under Section 69 of the Army Act. In the military shells are by definition hollow projectiles filled with an explosive charge, they have been that way since the 18th century, long before the invention of the brass cartridge case. They are fired from artillery, naval guns or other heavy weapons. For a long time I thought hearing people talk about 9mm "shell cases" was result of "Hollywood Firearms 101" education but it seems the terminology is more widespread than that.
