Two great-uncles and a father-in-law of mine were in the Pacific during WWII. My father-in-law was Navy. One great-uncle was a Seabee, the other was coastal artillery on Corregidor. All three survived the war, but are now deceased. On this day especially, I remember their service and sacrifice as I celebrate their victory and the fact that our Republic endures.

The very youngest of our surviving WWII veterans are 88 now...and then only if they enlisted in the final months of the war at age 17. We've already lost most of them.

NBC will air a live and much-advertised 3-hour version of the musical Hairspray in primetime tonight. CBS has a new episode of the reality game show Survivor. ABC has two new half-hour sitcom episodes and one rerun. To top it off--and you simply can't make this stuff up--CNN is airing a 2-hour special titled The Legacy of Barack Obama.

The number of major networks that will devote even 30 minutes to a special acknowledging perhaps the most impactful 20th-century U.S. event in order to help later generations remember and become informed about how the nation was thrust into World War II?

Precisely zero.

Last weekend, the History Channel showed Pearl Harbor: 75 Years Later and Pearl Harbor: The Truth; the Smithsonian Channel had The Lost Tapes: Pearl Harbor. That's about it other than all-too brief, few-second snippets on news segments showing a handful of surviving veterans gathering at Pearl Harbor for 75th anniversary commemorations.

God Bless the men and women and leaders of nations who rose up to stand against evil 75 years ago. Had the Axis powers not been defeated, imagine what our world would look like today.

I'm looking forward to seeing Josh Earnest unemployed in 46 days almost as much as I am Barack Obama.

I'm sure Smithsonian and History channels will repeat the shows this weekend, but I haven't checked. Pearl Harbor: The Truth wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but I'll watch the other two again.

And we lose our sense of history and appreciation of its heroes at our own peril, don't we.

I've had my DVR set up to record what programs there are. Unfortunately, life (read: family) got in the way today, but they'll be there to watch when I get time.

I was driving home from work yesterday listening to 103.3 FM. It's the local ESPN radio in DFW.
Tim Cowlishaw is one of the hosts, and he had his dad on the show by phone. His dad was 15 at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, and he gave great insight into how everyone responded, after hearing the news, and saying that everyone of his 27 classmates who graduated from Skiatook OK joined the service. He personally joined the Navy, and was in the Pacific at the end of the war. He described how he had to drive the school bus his senior year of high school because the regular driver joined the Army, and there was no one left to drive it.

We just don't appreciate the sacrifices that generation made, to not only protect the US, but to defeat the evil axis throughout the world.
