EyePro At The Range: It’s Not A Vague Suggestion

I know this is not new information for our membership, but we all need reminders sometimes.

After experiencing a ricochet from a 5.56 strike the shooter next to me I am super aware of eye protection. I only wear the Mil-Spec eyewear that is on the APEL (authorized protective eyewear list).

:iagree: Let me add my two cents. When performing potentially hazardous operations wear proper PPE, both at work AND at home.

Last year I was talking with our Safety Manager at work. He came in one Monday morning and had a cut over his eye from mowing his lawn.
I asked him if he was wearing safety glasses. He was a bit embarrassed and said "No, I was just being lazy." :nono:

I shot myself in the beard once - splashback from 25 yards, shooting at steel. A pretty freakish deal, but it happened. No threat to my eyes, though - it hit a good two inches from my left eye. :eek6

I took about 15 grains of ricochet from a M193 off of a steel target in my right forearm just above the wrist. It buried in pretty good and took pliers to get it out. I have thought about wearing a cup during carbine training since.

Eye pro is a no brainer.

Ricochet kicked up a good spray of gravel at me once, hard enough to scratch good safety glasses exactly where I look through to see the front sight.

Annoying having to go buy new glasses right then, but beats the alternative every time. I've also had mud splash off a wet berm pepper the glasses, so they're handy even for turtle popping.

While on the subject of eye protection, firearm disassembly is another good time to wear eye protection. Heavy springs, like recoil assemblies, are obvious, but little springs can be a bother, too. There is a small spring involved with the firing pin unblock lever in the trigger group on a P320 that will launch itself faster than you would think, and invisible in flight.

And invisible after it lands too... I have a spare, just in case.

For those of us who choose to enhance our eyesight instead of bumping into walls...

HySkore Over the Glasses Safety Glasses Set

These have worked very well for me. For the price, you get two pair of ANSI Z87.11 rated, anti-fog treated glasses. One pair is clear and one is mirror tinted for bright sunlight.

They do make you look a bit bug eyed, but I like that much better than the pirate eye-patch look.

Cheap enough I may try those, I usually just use my normal glasses because I can't find a good pair of safety glasses to go over them the ones I've tried never fit right

I am not familiar with these. I will have to look into them. :tiphat:

Looking at paper targets in the vicinity of a steel target makes the need for eye protection pretty clear.

Update: she was shot in the eye, bullet lodged in brain, and she has now passed. Very sad.

That sort of puts the kibosh on the idea that it was just spatter, or that eyepro would have done her any good.

It is truly sad, but I would like to watch where the investigation goes. Right now, my money is on some careless shooter down the line had an ND... probably someone who will not come forward out of fear.

Tragic and sad.

However, none of the accounts have indicated that the woman was not wearing eye protection. If she was I would venture a guess that it was cheap non-ANSI Z87 rated eye protection.
Will be interesting to see a final investigative report as to exactly what transpired.
