Anybody see COPS last night?

Specifically, the wonderful 3 hour episode on Court TV. If you didn't, the basic story is officer A responds to a call, officer B is seconds behind officer A (who is still in his patrol car). The suspect is in her minivan, and upon seeing the officer rams his patrol car head on and suspect remains in her vehicle. Both officers try to apprehend the suspect (who's car door is now open). So, again basically, the female suspect grabs a knife from the vehicle, exits the vehicle and charges officer A...who backpeddles out of the way. Then suspect charges officer B (this was all one movement by the suspect), so now officer A is behind her, and officer A tackles this suspect from behind...and becuase of the fall the suspect impails herself on her own knife. From the time the suspect exited the vehicle and charged the officers to the time she impailed herself on the knife couldn't have been more than 2 to 2.5 seconds. What a wake up call!!!

a) After seeing the amount of time someone could exit their vehicle and charge you with a weapon really got me doubting my abilities to defend myself in such an attack, mainly because of the lack of time. (Suggestions welcome here.)

b) If you are an officer who protects me and mine from these people...thank you. I appreciate your work but I do not want your job.

c) I need further training in self defense situations, my training does not have me as prepared as I'd like to think.

d) My favorite TV show is Cops! (Had to throw that one in!) :D

I've seen that incident before, and it's worth noting that this was not an athletic lady in any sense of the word, but she could have done some real damage very quickly.

As a former officer I have been to numerous officer safety and defensive schools. I also am a Krav Maga student, and have studied 2 other martial arts.

Most people completely underestimate edged weapons. If you are attacked by a person with an edged weapon you will most likely be cut.

Mostly you want to move to buy yourself more time. Move laterally if you can. Your 'weak' hand can be used to defend yourself also.

What was the name of that drill Charles demonstrated to us on that class at PSC???

Paladin, you were the runner...And one of the revolver ladies was the shooter...

A Tolar drill??? Forgive the spelling...

I thought that was an extremely effective drill to see how much ground can a person cover before two shots are fired...

I don't recall, did she do that from a draw condition, or a low-ready???

I learned the "21 foot rule" back in 1986 at a Street Survival seminar. If you are holstered, a person can cover 21 feet and cut you in the time it takes you to draw (from an open, not concealed position) and fire.

If your weapon is in hand, that distance decreases. IWO, they would have to be closer to you to be able to cut you first.

Distance =time and time=distance

If you are attacked by a person with an edged weapon you will most likely be cut.

When confronted with a blade, you must immediately accept that you will be cut, and that you will bleed. A lot.

You must also understand that being cut, and bleeding a lot, does not mean instant death. (Don't you love movies where the hero fights on after being shot 17 times, but everyone else drops dead on the spot from a single knife thrust?)

With that in mind, you have to minimize the number of times you're cut, and the location. In cultures where knife fighting is common, such fights are won by the number of cuts and amount of blood loss.

Remember: the winner of a knife fight is the one who goes to intensive care. The loser goes to the morgue.
