What does it take to convert 223 to 6.8?

Post by Daltex1 »

looking to see if its possible and what all it would take to make my S&W MP15T AR 15 IN 5.56 (223) to the 6.8. Would I better to buy a new gun in 6.8 or could I switch out parts? I knew when I bought the dang thing I should have gotten the 6.8 any help is greatly appreciated.

New upper and new or converted mags. Uppers for this are about $400-$500 bux for mid quality uppers.

EDIT: Youc an actually jsut rebarrel, but this is not a trivial operation. You'd need a barrel wrench, a upper barrel block and a winch.

If youre looking for something comprable to the M&P upper, it's about double that.

Why exactly are you looking to go to 6.8?

would like to have bigger bullet, thinking about using it for deer hunting this year, the 223 seems too small.

6.8 is on it's way out, from what I know, peopel aren't making it anymore. You might end up spending a lot more for ammo, and parts might be harder to come by in the future, since the millitary isn't going with it.

Unless you plan on doing a lot of long distance shooting, I honestly don't htink it's worth it, but that's just me.

I wouldn't waste my time seriously. I was about to get a 6.8 upper and then realized what for? I mean ya you can use it for Deer Hunting, but its not really that great for that either.

If you want an AR-15 type gun with a bigger bullet just go AR10 (.308) that would be better. But be carely, its heavy :)

Ammo and accuracy are the key with .223. I have taken deer and hog both. I want a .308 but the .223 is fine within 200 yds. for now. If you want something larger you can get a new or used deer rifle for less than you would a conversion upper. Probably not the best but suitable.
