How to Best Spread the Word

Twice recently, while filling out the ATF forms in different pawn shops after working out deals for two additions to my tactical shotgun needs, an individual watching me asked how to obtain a Texas CHL. The pawnbrokers had, of course, asked if I had mine since it makes purchasing firearms a much more pleasant experience since Texas CHL qualifies as NICS check.

I quickly explained how and hopefully they do since I believe that the more licenses are issued, the bigger clout with the legislature and other elected officials we hold.

I know that occaisionally the CHL subject is on the news, and in the papers, but how can people not know of this?

I realize that I, along with my fellow firearm fanatics on this and other forums I visit, are probably on the extreme end of things, and after all, I do so enjoy living in the world of the right wing conspiracy, but how many of the carbon-based life forms walking upright today have not made the connection between the brain cells and their hands equipped with opposable thumbs for holding firearms and exercising their second ammendment rights?

Besides food, my wife, sons, mydaughter-in-law carrying my growing grandchild

and air, and water or other liquid sustenance

, firearms are just about all I care about.

Becareful what you ask for. As it is, I think it is too easy to get one. There was a chick in my class that had never fired a weapon befre in her life. She hit my target at 10 yards. She got her TR-100.

I disagree, I tend to err on the side of freedom and personal responsibility. It would be nice if we had firearm laws like Vermont.

Really? You want someone armed, out and about, who can't handle a firearm? As proficent firearm handlers, we have enough to worry about with bystandards, and beyond the target issues in the heat of the moment. Someone that can not handle a firearm in a classroom enviroment, in broad daylight, 10 yards away surely doesn't need to be in the same public area as me.

A TR-100 is a proficiency certificate proving you are capable of safely handling a firearm and hitting a target the size of the average humanoid :P

+1! The second amendment does not say anything about any qualifiers.

That's preferable to the government --or you, me, or anyone else-- telling people they aren't "good enough" to deserve self-defense.

I would prefer that everyone who had a gun know how to use it. Knowing how to use it is a subjective standard.

Everyone has to start somewhere. If she spent the time and money to get a CHL without ever shooting before than she will most likely continue working on her gun handling skills. If not, she knows her skill level now and will be held resposible if she uses her pistol in irresponsibly.

One of these days I hope that all four "chicks" in my family will get there CHL. (wife and three daughters). This will take some time, my oldest daughter is 6

I will be teaching one of my sisters to shoot next weekend. She has never shot before. I am cofident that she can learn to shoot safely and hopefully enjoy it.

The one "chick" I knew who wanted a CHL, it was all I could do not to throw her into the truck and drive around till we found a place that gave out the old postcard apps...

Her handwriting left something to be desired, so the engineer in me took over got that all finished and in the mail...

Then we found an instructor and got her signed up...

But before then I took the chick to a range that rented out handguns and had her get used to the idea...

Worked her up to a good caliber after about 3 range sessions, and the next time she shot was the CHL qualifier...I think she shot a 274...

Since then I have worked on getting my chick to the range as much as I can...She is starting to really warm up to the whole shooting thing...

So its something to build upon...And something we can do together that doesn't require much to keep in the way of setting up an activity...

Just grab the guns, ammo, targets, eyes ears and body...And away we go...

I think she's ready to try rifles now...She'll be kicking herself for the fun she's missed...

Its all a very encouraging thing to me to see someone I care about develop an interest in something that has all sorts of applications...

The chick is now my wife...

It will be interresting to see which of the two "chicks" in my life go shooting first. My wife or my 7 month old daughter...

The 3 year old son already wants to go, but he isn't ready yet.

With 4 girls and 1 boy for kids, I have a hard time going to the range by my self. All like to shoot (not to mention they all can out shoot me.Must be the young eyes) and all but 1 has CHL. She takes here class in January. With 6 grandkids, there,s a lot of training left to do when they are old enough.

suXor I understand where your coming from. When I took my renewal class the instructor had to load one guys pistol mags for him. irritated me off at the time, the whole knowing your weapon and all. But looking at his target I will have to say he did know how to shoot. And he had 15 rounds to work with :) So after thinking on it I was ok with it. Not the same issue you have, but along the same lines. Offer to teach her or point her in the direction of a good class. Damn few ladies < not chicks > step up to arm themselves and for trying she should be commended.

Went to a co-workers home last night and met a church friend of theirs who mentioned he was going to be purchasing a Remington 870 shotgun very soon...

I played along and let him tell me about all the ins and outs of his experiences with firearms in his lifetime, and came away that he is serious about developing a collection, but is not sure about how to safely store the weapons...

I have found out thats its really better to listen to folks like this, and interject little seeds of knowledge that I have picked up over the years to see how they could develop themselves...

By the end of the evening, he became very interested in gunsafes, aquiring additional firearms for different purposes, and getting his CHL...Not to mention looking for a good range to frequent to actually shoot the things...

My wife got with his wife and were talking about the positive support one can give to serious issues like this, and she warmed up to the idea as well...

So as we figured our work was done that evening, we rode off into the sunset happy that we planted a good foundation with another couple who we think will develop a positive mindset about firearms and their proper use...
