2017 Situational Awareness Primer in 30 Seconds

Post by Skiprr »

In another Topic there was mention of our declining average attention span, the seeming omnipresence of mobile devices, and how constant use of them makes it more "difficult to filter out irrelevant stimuli" and maintain focus.

That reminded me of a recent Verizon commercial, and I found it on YouTube. Watch the 30-second glimpse into this guy's (scripted) life and think about how normal it seems in 2017. Col. Jeff Cooper would have to rethink his Color Code for conditions of situational awareness: if Condition White is relaxed and unaware, maybe there needs to a Condition Clear to describe willfully and actively distracted.

Stay focused, my friends. ;-)

One of the first things I tell my students during the situational awareness portion of class is 'GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR CELL PHONE!'

The video is a good example. I may use that in my presentation. :thumbs2:

I am hated in my family. Thanksgiving dinner when everyone comes over they are greeted with a basket. All cell phones go in the basket. I will not tolerate people coming to my house ostensibly to see me and to sit there with the face in tbeir phone. Life is too short.

Once i was giving a software demo to two coworkers. They were both nose deep in tbeir phones. I stopped talking for 60 seconds and neither noticed. I got up walked out and closed tbe door. I will not waste my time. Of course i got in trouble for that but oh well.

My son (13) asked me about UFOs the other night. I said "ya, i have seen two!" He said WOW! I then Told him not wo worry neither him or his friends will ever see them in Person. Why? He asked. "'Cause y'all are always looking down at your phones!" I'm still not 100% sure he gets what I was saying! :boxing

Syntyr,

Excellent!

I love it when on the news I see some oblivious doofus walk into a fountain pool or fall in a hole.

I hope they don't get injured, but perhaps a small amount of pain will wake them up from their zombie like attention to their hand held idiot boxes that should be played with when and only when it's safe to do so...

You know I get it. I have a couple of games on my smart phone and I can get engrossed in it. But, there are limits. Mine was hit about three years ago when the extended family were all over for dinner and one niece was sitting in the corner of the living room nose in phone and her brother was at the other end of the room with his nose in his phone. Now ordinarily I would have dismissed this but one of them chuckled and then went tapy tapy tapy and then the other chuckled. That's when I realized they were TEXTING EACH OTHER. Shaking My Head!

I find it particularly egregious when I'm out with my wife for dinner. I had to threaten to leave her sitting there with her phone while I went home. Now she is much better about it. We will tell each other if we are expecting an urgent call. Otherwise, the phones stay on silent mode and stay in our pockets.

A friend of mine actually did leave a first date sitting at a restaurant once when she answered her phone and then proceeded to start chatting with a friend. He waited a few minutes, and when it was clear that the call was not about some life threatening emergency, and was also not going to be quickly ended, he put some cash on the table for the bill and just left.

It's about valuing the people you are with more than whatever / whoever is on your phone. My attitude is that if you would rather be doing something else, then please go do that.

I think I'll change my "Condition Clear" from "willfully and actively distracted" to "willfully and self-destructively distracted."

My favorite situational awareness video can be seen here.

Here's a video that explains why we can easily miss the obvious let alone the subtle, even when we're not texting.

It's well worth watching.
