NRA Training needed for Cub Scout and Boy scouts activity.

Post by calvinbr »

Hello, My name is Calvin. I am the Cub Master for Pack 105, Raven District of the Sam Houston Area Council for the Boy Scouts of America. We are located in Mont Belvieu, Texas. We have planned a District Scout Extravaganza for April 11-13th of 2008, and we wish to include BB gun shooting for the cub scouts and shotgun / skeet shooting for the boy scouts. For this to happen, someone in our pack needs to be NRA BB Gun and Shotgun safety trained.

I have three people that would need to go through this training in order for the gun stations at our Extravaganza to be properly supervised. Besides myself, I already have two other willing volunteers. I am a CHL holder and have been an avid hunter since my youth. One of my volunteers was a Marine firearms instructor and has four years of military combat time. He has been a LEO for ten years, two of which he served as a fire arms instructor and also two years as a SWAT Tactical instructor. He has all state LEO certs for small arms, and for the last three years he has the Federal LEO certs for handguns M4 and M-249. My third person has worked for Homeland Security/Customs as a safety officer.

All three of us enjoy hunting and the outdoors. We are all firm believers in putting our families first and making sure our children have the chance to learn the skills involved with firearm training in a properly supervised and safe way. Obviously our sons are in Pack 105 and will be participating in the Extravaganza.

I have discovered that the only place to receive our required training is in North Carolina, and that this course takes place only once a year. As this training session is already over for this year we are in quite a bind.

I am now asking if there is anyone available in this forum that could help us to acquire this training. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you asked your council?

Have you asked your council? Here in Amarillo (Golden Spread Council) we have the NRA training every year but when ever someone wants to shoot BBs, 22s they just get a few packs together call it a council event and have at the local bull camp. They might be able to help you find someone to work the show. And I am also thinking (so don't hold this to me) that all firearms events must be council sponsored so the insurance will cover it.

Aric,

It is a District Scout event. This is why we need to get some people trained. We are hosting it. I just found out about this last night. I thank you for the information about asking the district. I did not think of that. Well I am still looking for the training as a back up then. I want to have it. So if no one will come I will be covered. I was told that Mr Cotton at PSC Shooting Club could train us. Mr Cotton, if you see this could you please help????? The NRA said you were a Trainer for this type of training that is needed. I thank you for your time in this matter.

Calvin, After a little searching I found this for a NRA Range Safety Officer Training in Texas. Its a little ways away from Houston.

And according to the BSA website http://www.scouting.org/pubs/gss/gss08.html

All you need for BBs is council supervision and training nothing fancy and for the shotguns you need Range Safety Officer training and Instructor Training. I found this date and times on http://www.nrahq.org and then under training.
Hope it helps
