11 Year Old Kills Charging Bear at Point Blank Range

Post by Excaliber »

His third shot was at range so close the bear had powder burns on its muzzle.

Details here.

First round was bird shot to "scare" the bear.

If a bear is close enough to require "scaring" it is close enough to kill. No bird shot. Kill shots in the magazine and chamber.

Great job by that little fella! I tell you, if it was some dirty hippie from San Fran up there, on his quest to discover his inner being and the meaning of life and such, he probably would have just defecated himself.

Maybe from now on they'll carry slugs in the shotgun, or large bore revolver / rifle.

Great job! :thumbs2:

They only last 113 days in Alaska, IE Chris McCandless who was absolutely clueless, unlike the amazing young boy in this story who had prepared himself.

In Alaska, snowflakes are bits of frozen water, not people.

That boy was amazingly cool-headed for a 30-year-old... ;-)

Details I find interesting:
... the bear was on him so quickly that he didn’t have time to take his rifle off his shoulder.”

...

The moment could have turned out differently. Lucas Clark hadn’t gotten around to putting a sling on his son’s shotgun, leaving the 11-year-old to carry it in his hands. He credits this and a lot of shooting practice with preparing Elliot for the moment.
I think there is a lesson in there some place.
“His first shot...
The next shot ...
...so close when Elliot hit it with his third shot, there were powder burns on the bear’s mouth.
"Still alive, the bear then slid by Elliot’s feet.... he put a kill shot it him,” Lucas Clark said.
Stoltzfus finished it off with another round.

Just the day before, Elliot still had a plug in his shotgun, meaning his gun only carried three rounds: the “topround” of birdshot and two slugs. He had taken the plug out the day before, Lucas Clark said, after calling his father to ask permission to do so.

OMG! It was an assault shotgun!
So five rounds, depending on how you read that description. Probably another lesson in there about how much ammo is enough...
Stoltzfus and Elliot Clark were armed... The other members of the party were not armed.
I know which part of the group I would want to be in...

Eleven years old and he stood and delivered multiple accurate rounds on a charging bear! I'll take him on my team any day.
