Border Crossing

Post by freddd »

So I had a crazy question regarding crossing the border and my CHL. Coming in from Mexico I obviously wouldn't be carrying, but am I required to inform border guards of my CHL or just standard police/highway patrol? I thought it was an interesting question that would prove useful to know the answer to.

You are not required to tell a federal agent that you have a CHL. You are required to tell Texas peace officers and magistrates.

I believe you are only required to display your CHL only if you are carrying a handgun on or about your person. Check GC 411.205 for the exact wording. I'd still present it if pulled over primarily to avoid alarming an officer if he runs my TDL.

The first part is correct. The second is debatable but I agree with it.

But even if you are armed, you are required to display your CHL only to Texas peace officers and magistrates.

Agreed...
We travel from here to San Diego quite often and have began to anticipate where the mobile border checkpoints will be. You are only required to present if they ask if you are carrying (which they do not do unless you appear suspicious) and only then if they are running you ID. We have to unload and pack everything up when we hit Yuma, AZ (stupid California) and only then do the Border Agents ask where we are going and to have a nice day. I give a thumbs up to those guys and thank them everytime we see them. I can't imagine checking cars 12 hours each day while wearing black in some of the most ungodly heat I have ever felt.

I could care less if he is alarmed, if i am not carrying I am not giving it to him. He should be relieved I have a CHL not alarmed.

"Mobile border checkpoints"... Traveling from one place inside the US, to another place inside the US, and being demanded to present "papers, please".

Well, in all fairness to these guys that are out there:
They are not asking for papers, lisences, passports or anything like that. These agents are keeping an eye on traffic just like a mobile drunk driving sting or keeping a watchful eye for illegal drug traffic. VERY little illegal activity happens at the REAL border crossings. Rather these actions occurr away from them and such the need for these mobile highway checkpoints.

With as bad as our immigration problem has become, they are a welcome sight to myself. If I have to slow down for a minute out of my travel so these agents can do their job, then so be it. I'm just trying to see the bigger picture in hopes that maybe someday our government will come to it's senses about illegal immigration. I'm tired of my tax dollars funding those that have no right to be here. If they want to come here through legal means in order to contribute to society...I'll be proud to shake their hand after their commencement cermony following their oath. We are being bled from the inside and Washington's turning a blind eye in an effort to "keep international relations" civil will be the demise of our great nation.

No you are not required in any way form or fashion. You can always show if you like but what is the point?
