Gunsmithing school at Murray State College

Post by Rex B »

At the urging of one of the other members here, I spent a week recently in Tishomingo OK at Murray State College. This school has a complete NRA-certified gunsmithing school. They have an entire 2-story building on campus dedicated to gunsmithing. They offer a 2-year program, with jobs waiting for graduates.
Of interest to us, they have an NRA Summer Program. This breaks out most of the subject matter into 5-day classes. 2017 course list below. They have a machine shop to die for, with 32 lathes. Those classes are capped at 32 and they turn people away every year.
We took the 1911 Armorer class. This ran 4 days, and it was very informative. I thought I knew my way around a 1911, but I learned new and useful things every day. We covered everything from disassembly to trigger jobs. Everyone brings their own guns to work on. The instructor, John Tremblay is an active gunsmith, as are all the instructors.
Cost: $300 for any 1-week course. You may also have to buy some tools specific to the class.
Lodging: You can rent a room in the campus dorms for $50/night, which includes 3 meals per day. It is walking distance to the classrooms.

All in all very much worth the time and money. I expect I'll be taking a course or two every year.

Thanks for the post. The course fees are very reasonable as well as the lodging accommodations.

The dorms were much nicer than I expected. The beds, not so much :grumble

That is not too surprising. Most younger people can tolerate lousy beds better than old folks.

I found out about this in June, so my summer was already booked up and I could not attend any classes this year. I do plan on taking some courses next year. Does anyone know if you have to be in Law Enforcement in order to attend the LEAS classes?

The course we took was LEAS 1911 Armorer. Neither of us are LEO

I vaguely remember that ;)

We decided next year we would bring our own inflatable beds.

Are they twin size beds? I have a 3 inch foam mattress topper for a twin I use at the deer lease. I like it a lot better than any blow up mattress I've used.

Yes, regular twin beds

What does "LEAS" stand for? I can find lots of references to it, but no definition.

I'm sending my son a link to this thread. He was employed as I guess what you'd call an "apprentice gunsmith" for 3 years, and currently has a good job as a CNC machinist after having graduated with a half dozen or so NIMS certifications from Lincoln Tech's CNC Machining and Manufacturing program last February. But he loves guns, and he became a machinist to further his knowledge in that area. His long term goal has always been to be involved in firearms at the design/prototyping/manufacturing level, although for now he just has a secure, good-paying job in industry, working for PMR Global in Burleson.
