Does anyone know if Cabela's has a good selection of handguns? What brands?

The Cabelas in Buda has a pretty good selection of new handguns. Prices seem to be pretty much MSRP. I don't get there too often. The last time was last summer. FWIW.

In Ft. Worth they have a large selection of all different models, brands, etc. . . including a fairly large selection of used ones.

As Carlson mentioned, the Ft. Worth Cabelas has a great selection. I'm in there occasionally to window shop as it is just a couple miles from my house :)

I have only been to their gun counter with the intent of making a purchase once though. We were going to buy a Bersa .380 for my wife and when we asked about it (there wasn't one on the shelf) the guy looked it up and decided there was one in the stockroom. While we waited for them to go get it, the sales guy went on and on about what a great little gun it was.... they could barely keep them in stock... etc.

Turned out they didn't have one in the back. As soon as he found that out he immediately changed his tune and started talking about how cheaply made they were - and that they were "ok, for a cheap gun" etc... and started singing the praises of a little Walther that he had on the shelf.

Even if I didn't know anything about the gun I went there to purchase, I would have had to be either stoned or plain ol' stupid not to notice that he completely changed what he was telling me in order to try to sell me something he had in stock.

It was insulting, to say the least.

It is only one experience. I'm sure that others have had great ones there, but it really soured me on the place. I much prefer to pay a little more at the range/shop where I shoot, and they don't tell me whatever they think will entice me to buy what they want to sell, regardless of what I want.

As a funny side note, I took my wife's pistol in once to get a grip for it (wanted to make sure it fit). It was a three ring circus while they locked it open and escorted me around the store.... and all the while my .45 was condition 1 on my hip

(I don't have a beef with this... I understand their policy, I just thought it was funny)

Cabela's in FtW is like any other big retail store. The counter help is going to vary. There is one older fellow there with a beard and glasses that I try to get to wait on me. There are a few others that get a "just looking" response from me.
The last real deal on a used gun I got was there.
And I do hate that escorted "walk of shame" when you buy a gun.

CTD is the same way. There are one or two guys there that I don't like to deal with. And they have some good guys that are polite and know their stuff, without being overly opinionated.

The following applies to the store in Buda....

Good selection? Yes. However, the only place with higher prices that I've seen so far is Gander Mountain. The customer service is poor to slightly below average at best, however the knowledge level was about average.

I have tried many times to buy a firearm there, but for many different reasons, it was never to be. Now, the only reason why I stop by their counter is to hopefully see something that I've never seen in the flesh (metal) before. I will continue to support the local gunshops as their prices are better, and Cabelas will survive without my support...

Always check out the Gun Library.. You never know.. I purchased a New Colt XSE but one of the grip bushings was stipped.. Took it back and they refunded my money in full (as they were sold out of the model).

Cabelas put the XSE in the Library and took $ 150 off.. It was NIB, or LNIB - so I bought it again and saved some $$. (This was 2 weeks after I returned it)..

Not a bad deal!

Apply a $50 gift card . . .

Apply a $20 discount certificate you received in the mail . . .

Use the purchase to activate a $150 "grand opening celebration" gift card you received in the mail . . .

Get credit for the purchase on your (free) Cabela's Club membership . . .

Pay the balance with a credit card that pays rebates. (Or airline miles, or something else you'll use.)

Work all these angles, and you do OK financially . . . even at Cabela's.
