Pepper Spray for a young lady...

Post by Aric »

What age do you guys (or gals) think is an appropriate age for a young person to carry pepper spray. And is there any laws prohibiting a minor from possessing pepper spray. The reason I ask is my daughter is about to be 13 and is starting to venture away from home. She has a cell phone but that isn't enough.

Thanks

Aric

Heck I will set up a poll for you guys..

AFAIK, there's no law prohibiting anyone from possessing pepper spray. However, I suppose most school districts prohibit it (along with nail clippers, etc.).

I don't think there's a fixed age limit from a practical point of view. The young person must be mature enough to recognize a threat and respond in a lawful way. Using pepper spray indiscrimately would be assault, and if the subject had something like asthma, it could be aggravated assault.

I really feel for people who have teenage children these days.

It depends entirely on the young woman. As Uncle Jeff said of boys, "Some people at that age are quite mature, but others go around in long baggy shorts with their shirt tails out and their hats on backwards."

If she can be trusted to stay home without a babysitter while her parents go out for the evening, she's probably mature enough to handle pepper spray. If she's old enough to date, she definitely should carry pepper spray.

Just make dang sure you educate her on non proper usage of pepper spray

You don't want a lawsuit because she used it inappropriately

I have a 13yr old neice who I would happily give pepper spray to b/c I know she is mature enough to handle it in the right situation. Her mother gave her a cell phone,so if shes mature enough to handle that responsibility then I'm considering giving her pepper spray for Xmas.

That being said, be sure to look at what kind of spray you buy if you do buy your daughter pepper spray.I've learned via my husband, who has been a Correctional Officer in TX for over 16yrs (and hes used ALOT of gas/spray in his career)to look for a spray that is oil based rather than water based b/c if the problem person in question is sweating or its raining etc. the water based stuff will come right off whereas the oil based stuff will stick to the skin and do its job.Just FYI
