Another scenario for thought

We had so much fun with the home invasion scenario, thought I'd run another by.

This is a real scenario experienced by my brother in Houston who was not armed.

While in the restroom (at urinal) of a fastfood restaurant, someone came in behind him, claimed to have a gun, (don't think he actually saw it) and demanded my brother's leather jacket. My brother gave it to him and the BG left. He stayed in the restroom for a few moments and did not see if the BG acted alone.

As a martial arts instructor prior to my CHL, I have always figured on following my own teaching of "Give them the jacket, wallet, etc, if you can get out alive." I am not for taking a life over anything I can replace. But.....

Not only is it difficult to determine whether I will be harmed anyway, but what if my weapon is exposed while removing the jacket?

What if I am wearing a CC jacket with my weapon in it?

Remember, he is behind me telling me he is armed. I am all about awareness, but even I am a little preoccupied at that moment.

Just wanted to see if anyone had thought about this.

Here's my off-the-cuff thought:

While you're still facing away from the robber, say something like, "Please don't hurt me. I'll do anything you want. I have five kids."

Make it sound like you are not a threat.

Then draw, turn around, and move as fast as you can at right angles to the guy. Get to cover if you can.

My guess would be that someone trying to rob you in that manner was bluffing. While criminals are generally stupid, shooting someone inside a restaurant with witnesses and probably cameras is not worth it for a leather jacket.

A robber with a real weapon would be robbing convenience stores for cash, not stealing something he had to fence.

I have thought about this aspect. Being new to carrying, I am using a pocket holster for my PM9 and am thinking about a Kangaroo holster.

If I carry the Glock 22 or the Hi-Power, I will probably have an untucked shirt vs. just a jacket to cover it. I think there are too many times I need to remove my jacket and will need the additional layer of concealment.

I go into a stall and close the door when at a public restroom just for that reason.

You are right, he has the initiative, so you may give up the goods and he still may do you harm.
You might be able to cover your gun by turning, or shielding it with the jacket as you take it off and hand it over.

You might have to move a little to see the weapon.
You might have to feign compliance, move into a better position, then decide if/when you should launch or comply & to what degree.

What if I am wearing a CC jacket with my weapon in it?.

I like pocket or on body carry better. I may use my jacket as cover for my drawstroke or in some other manner.

I often carry IWB and removing my jacket will expose my sidearm. Hypothetically, I probably would pretend to comply long enough to determine if he needs to be shot, pepper sprayed, or something else. In reality, I use a stall in public restrooms.

This is why I use a locked stall, but here's some more thoughts here,

I agree completely. A leather jacket alone is not worth taking a life, with a very few exceptions that have been noted in other posts here recently.

One doesn't really want to arm a criminal, right? In this case, only each individual can make this choice for himself, but you get the point.

As stated before, try to always use a locked stall. At the very least it will provide you a little degree of concealment to make your decision if posed with this situation then.

I have rarely found a stall that could not be opened with a stiff arm. Quite often, the latches are broken and I need to improvise something to keep the door shut at all.

At least you will know they are there better than having your nose up by the wall.
I guess if at a bad area you could take a page from the ladies play book and take a friend with you
