Checked luggage has to be unlocked when the ticketing agent weighs it and takes it from you. Otherwise they cut the locks in the back area when they put them on the conveyor belt.
Checked luggage is the only kind that you can have a firearm in on a plane. You can't pack one in a carry on unless you are a US Marshall or some other type of Fed.

Every time I have flown with guns post 9/11 (many times) TSA has me lock up the gun case after they x-ray it.

Agreed. That's why I said earlier that I didn't know the procedure with firearms which has now been pointed out. But I was referring to regular luggage in original reply to the previous post comment.
If you don't stand for something, then you will fall for anything.

Checked baggage does not have to be unlocked. If you use TSA approved locks, then they can unlock them if required, then lock them back. If you use the old style, then they will cut them if they need to examine the baggage. Also, TSA is SUPPOSED TO put a sheet in your baggage that it was examined, but that doesn't always happen like it should.

99% of the time it is the Airline Baggehandlers who are stealing valuables from the suitcases.
